There is nothing in the world weirder than revisiting your past in great and glorious Technicolor surround-sound. I am working on a project about my weight loss surgery, about what came before and what came after, and I am spending a lot of time sitting down and looking through things I want to call relics–my old blog, my body of work posts on elastic waist, the countess emails I wrote when I was thinking about it.

A few weeks ago, there was a Chinese new year party at a friend’s parent’s house, and it was delightful, as their parties always are, and filled with excellent people who I want to talk to and good food and a lot of booze and I was very excited to go, because people! Conversation! Dressing up and wearing lipstick and socializing! It was all so exciting.

A very hilarious friend of mine once said, well, you could have chosen a pseudonym like Cheeky Chubbypants, or Chubby McSparklepants, or Fattie BoomBatty, and then you'd really be sorry.
But when I started what was originally a weight-loss journal, so many years ago, I chose to go with my middle name, which would be Anne, and my mother's maiden name, which I have always loved. Three guesses what that would be. We don't even have to count the first two, so you can just go crazy-nuts.

A very best friend of mine was recently diagnosed by her doctor as being fat. She had gone in for a pain in her hip and came out with an order to go on the South Beach Diet and lose 6 pounds this month. It sounded to me exactly like bull ----- , exactly like what you hear doctors doing all the time, being blinded by their patient's weight and assuming that all their problems, every one of them from the mental to the physical, all trace directly back to their weight. And it made me angry to hear how upset she was, on the phone. How she felt unwieldy, unlovely, unlovable.
