Telecommuting has never looked better -- to companies, not workers.

Remember when employees who wanted to try telecommuting had to build a case and pitch the idea to their skeptical bosses? Working face to face with coworkers in the same office is still preferred, but many companies searching for ways to cut costs and not more workers are embracing telecommuting. <p>More or less officially, I am out of work. I had a contract job as a proofreader at an advertising agency; they wanted me full time, and to run the department. I said I can only do part-time! They took me on, anyway. When I didn’t change my mind about working for them full-time, they... Read More »

Working out of your house has many positives – zero time spent commuting, controlling your schedule, etc. And, no dress code.<br> <p>However, I am pondering if the last sentence – the one about the lack of dress code – may actually not be that great. Yesterday, I attend a fantastic conference focused on flexible work options. Read who was there and what they said here. One of the striking points that came out of it was that while many of the panelists were talking about co-working options for their employees, none of them had certainly heard the term. And when I spoke to the speaker from Accenture and Cisco, both of them were excited about learning more. Epiphany! While I use the word coworking constantly, most of our members don't even realize they are co-workers. Those of us in the community share time on Google groups, talk about our spaces, give advice, share stories, etc. But those who haven't heard of coworking maybe need a little lesson and those of us in the coworking world maybe to learn how to use other terms to bring others into the community. By Vera Babayeva, originally published on Workitmom.com.
On a Monday morning last month, my live-in nanny pretended to be sick and I naively believed her, and left her alone to get better. (I took my two kids, ages 4 and 1, to my mother). In the evening, I came home and found her copy of the keys in the mailbox and a note on the coffee table.
I was angry, lost, shocked, and excited. Excited because I thought this was my opportunity to finally work from home. I took Tuesday off. My husband took Wednesday off so I could go to work and ask my boss to work from home while I find a new nanny. At first my boss made me feel that he was doing me the biggest favor in the world. I felt the same way. Wow, I thought, working from home is a luxury.
