The Grey
Knight...Origins On the planet Shai, lived a people unlike
any known to humans. They were doppelgangers, shape shifters that
could take any form. One stood out, he choose to imitate humans. He
tried to imitate the Dark Gods, but found it to be full of madness
and was not… Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog

It has not been an easy thing to single out our favorite posts and comments and discussions on Shine in our first year because there have been so, so many memorable ones. That's why when I went in search of some of the amazing comments from the past months, I stopped short when I came to this post, "Working moms and the Mommy Drive-By: Why do we do this to one another?" It's the kind of post that could easily spark the facile and mean back-and-forth we've come to know, pitting working moms against stay-at-home moms. But it doesn't. Instead, one thoughtful, measured comment gives way to another, and very quickly we had the kind of conversation sorely lacking and sorely needed among women who are trying every day to do the best we can for our families. Sure, there are some simple not-very-nice, judgmental words thrown into the mix, but the overall tenor is much more considerate, introspective, and way less knee-jerk than so many of these kinds of online discussions. Rick Springfield, crafty
goodness and topics that focus on the goodness of parenting. That
pretty much sums up what I had the most fun writing about on Shine
Parenting over the past year. My all-time favorite moments were all
about spending time with my crush, Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog

When I think about the most surprising reaction from this last year on Shine, I automatically remember Wholesome Wear, the swimsuits that "highlight your face, not your body."
While I was personally offended by the things (Really? You want me to cover up my entire body and sweat on the beach because somehow the female body is offensive? I don't think so), many of you had a different perspective... Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (15) | Blog

A lot has happened in the year since we launched Shine. We have a new president, and his election was history-making, inspiring many here on Shine and enraging others. Companies have been laying off workers in big, chunky numbers, bringing the U.S. unemployment rate to 8.9 percent from 5 percent in April 2008. Economic crisis took hold in the fall, as the markets took a steep dive and are only (hopefully) beginning to show signs of real upward movement. It has been a tough year for a lot of Shine readers, and that's why I'd have to say my favorite posts to write have been the ones that have sparked you to share experiences and ideas for saving money and getting through tough times with ingenuity and always-resourceful ways.
Whether it's sharing ideas for an inexpensive staycation or ways to save on groceries, it's so great to see you jump in and share tips and ideas that help you live on less--something we are all trying our best to do these days. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog

As Fashion + Beauty Editor Jennifer Romolini says, we never know for sure which posts are going to inspire strong reactions and lots of conversation on Shine. It’s a dynamic daily adventure here in our vibrant corner of the Web, and it’s been fun to look back at what got you going when it came to talking about money and work and finding a way to balance it all without losing our minds.
So, even though this post is all about things we can’t believe you talked about over the past year-plus on Shine, the truth is, really, nothing surprises us. Maybe a better word is astounds, and what me astounds me is when a post is honest and speaks to a universal truth and shared experience.
Take Jett’s “I need a tutor in Domestics 101” post.

"What a piece of work is a man, how noble in
reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express
and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how
like a god! the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals—and
yet, to me, what is this… Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (2) | Blog

When I write about parenting
issues, I never expect Shine readers to hold back on comments.
Parenting brings out emotions, discussions of right and wrong, and
serious maternal (and paternal) instinct. We internalize and reach
deep to address issues that are important to us. And then we get
fired up.… Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (10) | Blog
