Lots of columnists and bloggers are criticizing Edwards for taking their story so public now. How could she put them back in the harsh public eye? they ask. Think of your children, they say. I think that’s exactly who she was thinking about when she wrote this book, and when she talks to Oprah or Matt, or whoever. She is terminally ill with a cancer that she knows will kill her but doesn’t know if it will kill her in a year or in 10 years. She has a lot to say, but is not sure how much time she'll have to say it....Just maybe writing this book saved her sanity, saved her self, saved her life. She’s entitled to that, don’t you think?

We're 101 days into the new administration, but today it's hard not to think back to the campaign trail and, specifically, to the women on the trail. There were more than a few points during the primary campaigns when I remember thinking I'd gladly cast my vote for the candidates' wives more readily than for the candidates. Elizabeth Edwards impressed me every time I heard her speak, or read her prolific Web writings, with her intelligence, passion, and devotion to her marriage. She made me believe John Edwards was more than I thought he seemed at first--only to be terribly disappointed when he admitted to an affair (without admitting paternity of a child) after he had dropped out of the presidential race.

Now, Elizabeth, terminally ill with cancer but still writing (thank goodness) has written a book aptly titled "Resilience." The New York Daily News has obtained a copy of Edwards' book, to be published May 12 by Broadway Books. She reveals she was literally sick with disappointment when her husband told her about the affair.
