Our own mortality is not
a topic that many of us are willing to talk freely about. The
thought of the discussion of buying life insurance
can make people uncomfortable. The thought of actually having to
use it one day is consciously avoidable. Most of us have
known… Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (548) | Blog

Last year I painted my deceased
grandmother as a gift for my grandmother's daughter, my mother.
While I was painting, I kept thinking what a remarkable woman my
grandmother was; remembering the old fashioned traditional values
she imparted, by her example. I would guess that she was… Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (311) | Blog

It's a big week for Sarah Palin.
Four months after her early departure as Alaska's governor, a year after the end of her vice presidential bid as John McCain's running mate for the White House, and six months after signing a book deal with Harper Collins, Palin's book is out. She appeared on Oprah to kick off her book tour, and sales were brisk before she sat in Oprah's coveted chair. "Going Rogue: An American Life" is on the bestseller lists at Barnes and Noble and Amazon, which is selling the $29 book for $9 to compete with Wal-Mart's bottom-price bestseller deals. (No wonder advance sales are doing so well!)
Book reviewers and the AP have gotten advance copies of the book, so as we wait to dive into the 432-page, no-index read ourselves, let's take a look at some of the early reviews: Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (211) | Blog

Every moment quicky comes and quickly must go; And every moment comes to life but once. And all the days, like the sun playing tag with the moon, Start with a sunrise, and… Read More »

West Indian Girl singer Mariqueen Maandig is giving up her gig to marry Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor, her bandmates declared in August. WWE announcer Lilian Garcia announced her retirement Monday after 10 years with the WWE Divas, trading the wrestling ring for a wedding ring. And over at the StarTribune.com, a reader tells columnist Carolyn Hax to put marriage before career because "it really wasn't worth all the sacrifices."
Which made me wonder: If you couldn't have both -- and if finances weren't an issue -- which one would you choose? Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (36) | Blog

Growing up, laundry lines
hanging in backyards were a common site. We'd hang our sheets
on ours, and I remember throwing a big blanket over it more than a
few times to make a "tent" for backyard camping. But when
my husband hung some sheets and other items outside on a line soon
after… Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (22) | Blog

There's an in-depth interview with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the new issue of Vogue and--though we haven't always been the former senator's biggest fans--in this story, we were mightily impressed. Clinton comes across as a woman who's strong, independent, well-prepared, fair, deeply knowledgeable, thoughtful, and good at her job. Much of the article takes place behind the scenes, as writer Jonathan Van Meter follows Clinton through last summer's weeks-long tour of Africa. The result is a fascinating, West Wing-ian read, a window into the lives of high level public officials abroad. But it's also worth picking up for Clinton herself, who seems a very different, more genuine, relaxed, and candid politician than the one who was dodging fake bullets and fighting dirty with Obama just last year.
