The image of cats at Halloween

Although I love Halloween when it comes to watching how excited my kids get as they dress up in their costumes and go out to trick-or-treat, I dislike this holiday for the awful image of cats that are portrayed on decorations, pumpkins, etc. There are countless Halloween images of mean-faced black cats with their backs hunched up, displaying piloerection (hair standing up). You won’t find any decorations with mean-faced dogs on them for Halloween but there’s always an endless supply of cat pictures that continue the negative impression of felines.

As a result of the continuing bad press that cats get during Halloween, there are some safety issues you need to address if your cat is allowed outdoors. If you have a black cat, he is especially at risk when it comes to being the target of cruelty during this holiday. Most shelters no longer adopt black cats out during the month of October just to prevent the potential for abuse. With your own black cat, if you haven’t started keeping him indoors already, please begin the transition. He should at least be kept indoors the night before Halloween, Halloween itself, and the night after. If you can keep him in starting tonight that would eliminate any risk.

Even if your cat (black cat or otherwise) isn’t at risk for potential abuse during Halloween, there are other factors to consider. The sights and sounds of costumed kids on the street can be confusing to kitty. And although a person may not intend any harm to your cat, any attempted pranks or games could be terrifying to the unsuspecting animal. Costumes themselves can be frightening for many cats. That’s something to consider even if your cat stays indoors. He may not be comfortable being in close quarters to your children if they’re dressed up in costume.

If your cat has a habit of attempting to rush out the door whenever it’s open, then Halloween can be a real challenge for you. To keep kitty safe, place him in a separate room to prevent the chance that he might slip out the door as you’re handing goodies to the trick-or-treaters.

Candy is not healthy for cats and chocolate is especially toxic. Cats don’t typically have a sweet tooth but if your cat has gotten into the habit of swiping food from the table or has been exposed to sweet food from family members, make sure that Halloween candy is kept safe.

Finally, please do your part as an informed cat owner by not displaying Halloween decorations that negatively portray felines.

Wishing you a safe and happy Halloween.

During Halloween, I tend to use images of cute black cats, or ones that can be considered "spooky" (black cat with yellow eyes in front of a moon) instead of mean.

I used to have a black cat, and about 10 years ago we couldn't find her on Devil's Night. Thankfully she was just hiding in the house and didn't get outside like we had feared, but we were frantic trying to find her.

That kitty died in '07 (RIP Rose Bud :( ) but now we have a black dog and I'll probably be just as worried about him on that night. One can never be too careful when people think it's funny to harm animals.

So true! I actually found my two little black cats last Halloween. I thought it so weird that I had been wanting a black cat, and here come two on Oct. 31. But well, crazy cat lady that I am, I kept them. Names are Boo and Jinx. I'm going to try to corral them up this year so nothing happens to them.

While I agree that all cats (and especially black cats) should be kept indoors during Halloween, I really don't see any harm in the way cats are portrayed in Halloween decor. I am a black cat owner and also love Halloween decor. Hissing black cats with arched backs are a Halloween icon. I think that the abuse many unfortunate kitties suffer this time of year is the result of ridiculous religious superstition, misinformation, and thoughtless cruelty from immature kids.. not decorations.

My husband and I have four beautiful black cats. 2 males, 2 females. They are very special to us, so we don't hand out candy. So our sweet four legged friends will be safe on Halloween and all year long. It just worked out that we adopted all black cats. We love them, and no one should harm any cat especially black ones.God Bless all the homeless furbabies out there, praying for your safety. My husband calls me the cat and dog lady because I rescue cats and dogs. And very proud to say yes I am the lady that tries to help animals. :) Alabama

One of your viewers was also talking about their black dog maybe being in harms way. It was Feb. 20, 2004 when our beautiful Newfoundland ran away from us while playing in our yard. Kahn was became in harms way, when two men in their late 20's early 30's picked Kahn up in their truck. Took him to their home let their pitbulls fight our sweet baby, and then shot him in the head twice. Dump his poor body along side the road a mile and half from out home down a rural road. My husband and I were right on kahns heels trying to locate him. he was a fast runner. These two men were looking for trouble and Kahn was in the wrong place that night. Newfoundlands are very sweet, trusting dogs. Not to be mistreated by anyone. These men just got three years probation, and a slap on the wrist. Kahn we will always miss you buddy.Kahn was just four. We just lost our other Newfoundland Bear in October to Lymphoma(cancer) Bear was just four years old. We miss you Bear so much and know you are with Kahn at THE RAINBOW BRIDGE HAPPY AND HEALTHY. :) Alabama
