Over the weekend, before we left CO to return to NY, we watched our granddaughter play with Twiggy, her Greyhound, in her backyard. She was waving the equivalent of a fishing pole contraption (all homemade) about the yard, with a furry 'something' attached to the end of it. It reminded me of the cat toys my other daughter amuses her cats with.

I found it amusing to watch Twiggy chase after this strange dog-toy. He was a bit funny. Every bit as funny as my other daughter's cats that live in Buffalo, NY! Little did I know that cats enjoy making us laugh. According to "Do Cats Have a Sense of Humor?" from the Petcentric files, cats sometimes do seem to be playful on purpose. The article says, "Cat owners can swap stories about the antics of the kitties and get nearly the same joy and amusement out of them as if they were witnessing the antics first hand."

Well, I don't need a scientist or pet behaviorist to tell me that, do you? More interesting is this, "Author Sarah Hartwell, who works for Cats Protection in the UK, writes, 'After spending hours watching my own cats, it seems that they have a sense of humor, though no where near as sophisticated as a human sense of humor. On second thought, having witnessed my cats' laughing at me, their sense of humor is probably so sophisticated that us humans can't understand the jokes."

Wabby, resident prankster in our house, doesn't laugh at us. She merely stares in disbelief at us - hiding that Chesire cat grin, thinking we don't know when she's fooling us. Oh yeah, she's got it down pat.

Like this cat, described in the article in mention, "Cats are known to play tricks on other species as well. In the same book (The Nine Emotional Lives of Cats by Jeffrey Moussaieff Mason), the author tells of a cat who plays a sophomoric prank on a poodle. (well, a poodle... why not? no offense to poodle owners - love'em, they're great, but...easy to fool, admit it!) The cat baited the dog to chase him, and the dog complied. The cat ran with purpose, coming to an abrupt stop, causing the poor pup to fall down a steep embankment. The dog was unharmed, and the cat, as if to show he was only kidding, climbed down the embankment and licked the pooch."

Oh really..."as if to show he was only kidding..." He wasn't kidding. He was serious. That's why it's funny! At least to the cat.

I like the way the article ends, "We've always known that cats are very smart creatures, with distinct personalities. It only makes sense that if they have personalities that show up in varying levels of playfulness, aloofness, sweetness, affection and sneakiness, it would follow that they have some level of a sense of humor, sometimes a delightfully devious one."

Oh yeah!

Of course they do! Just like some of us. I know so, cause some of cats were funny just to make me laugh. My dog could be funny too.

I have had several cat's in my life growing up and now. I can tell you that each and everyone has a different sense of humor, some more playful than others and there were some that were onorey, then of course we have our serious friends. We have our little smokey bear right now and he is the most loveable, sweet and playful little guy we have ever had. He is just so funny! He is part of our family..one of our kids!

along side our driveway, with a 40 foot drop to our neighbor’s driveway. They would chain their dogs near their garage doors. Our cats would walk up and down that stone wall for hours at a time and sit ever once in awhile and clean themselves as the dogs would bark straining on their leashes practically strangling themselves. It was great fun to watch, because the say dogs are fast learner and these dogs never learned year in/year out that they were being teased.

I got my cat when he was only a hand full. Now he is 15 yrs. old. My sweet little buddy makes me laugh every time he is nearby. He rolls over in funny ways and makes sure that I'm watching every second of it and I keep telling him that he is so funny and I enjoy his antics so much.

Cat number two cares only for one living and much grooming cat and that is her beautiful self. No antics, no funny moves for me. But, just the same, I love both of them very much. ///

Our cat's have two very different personalities. Xena is almost 2 while Gabrielle just turned 1. Xena is quiet, rarely makes any noise and is very jealous of all other people and animals, whereas Gabby is the Hey, What's up? kitty. Gabby is exactly that, she talks all the time(she's a tourtie) When they get in one of their high speed chases, both of them have fluffed out squirrel tails,it's so much fun to watch, we laugh our asses off. It's just like having kids again, I even get the Who..me? look when something gets knocked over or we hear a big bang. I now know how people become so attached to their pets. I, for one know that cats are very intelligent, and know how to get what they want, but they also give so much love regardless.

I have a 13 year old Siamese, Rex, that has a definite sense of humor. My little Jack Russel dog, Buster, is scared to death of him because Rex loves to torture him. Rex will purposely play with Buster's toys just to make him cry. Rex will also block the doorway so Buster can't get past without being swatted. If Buster is playing fetch with someone, and the toy goes close to Rex, Buster will not go get it. He will just sit and cry. I also have another cat, Ridley, who likes to pretend he is invisible by hiding behind chair legs. We call him the Monster and Stealth Kitty because, he loves to sneak up on everybody. My house is constantly full of antics in one form or another. They always make my day!
