I THOUGHT My Skin Was Clean -- But I Was So Wrong

I'm so bummed. I've been using my cleanser for ages and I was convinced that it was getting my skin perfectly clean, but it totally wasn't. In retrospect, the near-constant breakouts should have been an indication that something was up, but I don't think I'm the only one who assumed that washing your face automatically gets rid of all the gunk.

Turns out, no, no it doesn't. It totally depends on what cleanser you use and your technique. If you're wondering whether your skin is "really clean" or just "fake clean," check out this quiz (it’s how I discovered my blunder in the first place). Then, check out these tips to keep your skin truly clean:

1. Massage your cleanser on your face for at least 30 seconds, but ideally up to one minute. This helps the product get into your skin and adhere to any dirt or oil before you rinse. Quickly slapping it on and rinsing isn't going to do much for your skin.

2. Find the right cleanser for your skin type. Using one that's too gentle won't get rid of enough oil and dirt, and using one that's too harsh will dry your skin out and cause it to produce more oil (lame). Find the right cleanser for you here.

3. Don't go crazy. Sure, taking care of your skin is important, but that doesn't mean you need to go overboard. Sometimes putting too many products on your face is worse than using none at all. Take this quiz to see if you're over-doing it with your routine.

4. Often, cleansing alone won't be enough to solve tougher skin problems. If you're suffering from blackheads, blemishes or dry, flaky skin, check out these tips for help.

5. When it comes to pimples, you're not supposed to squeeze or pop them. BUT … if you're like me and can't help yourself (it's a sickness, I promise I'll join a support group or something soon) then use this video as a guide to popping pimples at home safely and sanitarily.

The test didn't help me at all. I do have clean skin and rarely wear makeup (one reason I have such clear skin). I have had to try different cleansers and finaly found one I really like.

I never used to be able to go a full one min. on the cleaning phase...that was my big let down, despite good products for my skin type. Once I got my Clarisonic..it times out after 1 min. Sometimes now I even do another 30 sec after that if I had a lot of makeup on (for me that is) since you don't clean the brush off on the Clarisonic during the 1 min it goes for. I need to exfoliate a ton less now that I have my Clarisonic. It cleans out the pours so well and does smooth off the build up of dead skin cells doing it's proper cleaning. Never thought I would spend the $ for one - but honest, it's the best investment in my skin I ever have made - that and keeping with good day and night eye creams! I am 57 and don't have ANY wrinkles around my eyes AT ALL. Been using eye creams since my mid 20's. Wish I had been that good to keep up with the rest of the parts of my skin as I have on my eye area!
