A Pro's Trick to Covering Up Under-Eye Circles

When it comes to hiding your under-eye circles, your regular concealer that you use to cover blemishes won’t cut it.

You need is a peach-based one in a shade slightly darker than you would normally use to neutralize the purple rings, says NYC makeup artist Dara Klein. "Identify your skin tone first relative to your level of under-eye darkness."

For example, if you have fair skin and very dark circles, your instinct may be to choose a light concealer. But this shade will actually enhance your circles because it’ll only match the skin around the eye and not the shade of the actual darkness. So go up a shade — it’ll be light enough for your skin tone but corrective enough for the level of purple under the eye.

Once you find a good concealer, apply it with a small brush for the most precise coverage, says Klein. "The key is to only apply the concealer only over the rings, nowhere else." Use a tapping motion instead of wiping the brush back and forth, which just blends the product into your skin.

Some great under-eye concealers to try:

  • DuWop Circle Block Duo
  • Rimmel Recover Concealer
  • BeneFit Erase Paste
  • Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage

What if your black. I don't have deep dark circles, but my under eye region is slighty darker than my regular skin tone. What to do?

MrsKlongonPasadena, Since you don't have deep circles but just a slightly darker tone I'd try one of the "illuminating" products. They come in both powder and liquid form and basically add a "reflective" effect. Have one of the salespeople at the makeup counter try it out on you the next time you're at the mall & see how you like the effect.

I'm fREALLY fair skinned and use Mineral Make-up by Loreal Bare Naturale Light Ivory 458 for my foundation...which is the lightest shade they offer, so should i use the next number up to conceal under-eye darkness? Or two shades up?

Hi Samantha, I'm really fair-skinned too (think Nicole Kidman fair---I couldn't tan if I tried)...my favorite under-eye concealer is Physician's Formula Circle RX in the yellow shade. My under-eye circles look blue, and the yellow does a great job at color-correcting the blue, plus the formula is nice and creamy--it doesn't look cake-y after it's applied. I'm a make-up artist (for a different company) and I've tried dozens of concealers...even compared to expensive brands, Physician's formula Circle RX is my favorite. The tube lasts 4-5 months and only costs about $10.

Benefit Erase Paste is the best. (Even a manager at Sephora confirmed it.) I've been using it for at least 1 1/2 years and have yet to run out. Fair has the exact peach-ish color a pasty white girl is looking for. I dot the concealer on under my eyes and in other dark areas BEFORE I apply my foundation with my finger tips and then lightly press it with a makeup sponge to blend.

I am fair skinned as well and have purple circles, how ever the rest of my skin is even toned enough that I dont have to wear foundation, just powder, but no concealer I find works well for me without having to use foundation as well, any suggestions? I prefer not to use foundation.

I absolutely LOVE Sonia Kashuk's Concealer Palette (which I bought at Target). The salmon color is perfect for covering my undereye circles and I can't live without the green color to correct the redness around my nose and in a few spots on my cheeks. The only thing I don't care much for is the one powder concealer in the quad. It just doesn't do much, but I use it to set the other three cream concealers. That palette is my weapon of choice.

Oh good lord, why does everyone always have bring race into everything? It's a stupid article about makeup for christ sakes. Maybe she's pasty and didn't want to give bad advice on something she doesn't know about. Good lord.

I don't think she purposefully left out people with "brown skin" to be nasty and I don't think you should take it that personally. My guess is that she is prolly a pasty chick and doesn't have any other experience to go off of other than that and didn't want to give bad advice. Sheesh----- why make a mountain out of an anthill? Or are you always an instigator like that?
