Preschool is a jungle.
Little ones don't really need backpacks for school, but it definitely makes them feel like big kids. Organic cotton backpacks by Mimi the Sardine are the perfect size for preschoolers and can carry a lunch, a sweater, and that small lovey for rough mornings on the playground. My daughter is 24 and she still has her purple LL Bean book bag. I bought it for her when she was in the 1st grade. I bought a yellow one when she was in 5th grade. The purple one has seen better days and she wrote all over it with magic marker. She stores her daughters winter gloves, hats, etc in them now. I remember all the key chains and jingle charms she used to hang on it.
My son, 25, still has his black LL Bean book bag since 3rd grade and when he started high school, I got him the messenger type bag. He still uses it through college. The laptop fits perfectly inside.
My grand-daughter will be starting kindergarten this fall and she has eyed the pink book bag with the butterfly on it.
LL Bean is a good product. I highly recommend their book bags.

Report AbuseMy daughter is going into 7th grade. Here they aren't allowed to carry anything with them all day other than a small purse. She prefers her oversized Twilight tote bag to a big bulky bookbag to carry her stuff home with her.

Report AbuseI think the biggest concern with totebags is the strain they put on a kid's back, shoulders and neck. But if your child isn't carrying that many books, it's not as much of an issue.

Report AbuseAh, freshman year is coming for me...
Well, to those parents who have children heading for junior high (7th & 8th grade), I'll give you some words of advice while buying that perfect bookbag/backpack and other must's.
1.) A small bag or pack is a no-no.
Your child(ren)'s teachers will most likely say they prefer wide, spacious bags for their students. I don't care how cute your daughter thinks the small hello kitty one is; she's in junior high getting ready for high school, get her a Jansport.
2.) Binder. Binder. Binder. It is a must.
Get your son or daughter a 3 inch binder. Don't go with the wimpy ones, you guys should know better. (It should fit PERFECTLY in the backpack you buy him/her. If they keep it organized.) Make sure to keep everything organized inside the binder aswell, and keep it stocked with paper.
3.) Aim for a backpack than the one strap bookbag. Especially for the girls. I'm saying this from experiance; Used to carry around a black Converse bag on my left shoulder with about three books, and I would carry my HEAVY AS HECK binder in my right hand. It got to a point where a could barely move my left arm. So, stick to the Jansport backpacks or the Vans backpacks (which are HUGE and stylish).
4.) Other than that, have fun finding that special backpack! :)

Report AbuseWell I think that the Jansport backpacks are the best! They are a little expensive, but they are worth it. The Jansport company gives you a lifetime warranty!!!! - Which means that you don't have to buy a new backpack over and over again! So you can just mail them back the backpack if you rip it or break it (get the zipper stuck). They will try to fix it, but if they can't they mail you back a new one as long as you keep the tag! Yeah LIFETIME WARRANTY!!!! :] Happy Back To School Shopping!
