The Best Honeymoon Destinations in September

By Sarah Snyder
Getting married in September offers newlyweds not only the cost savings of traveling in the off-season, but the break of being away from the throngs of summer vacationers. Whether it's crisp, cool air and turning leaves you're after or a wild and crazy lu'au, consider the following recommendations of the best honeymoon destinations in September: Aspen, Colo.; Montauk, N.Y.; and Hawaii.

Mountauk, Long Island, New York
Montauk really shines in September, and this peaceful beach is a great location to take pictures. Go whale watching with your sweetie before taking an afternoon trip to the Montauk lighthouse. Old houses, gardens and birdwatching add to the list of natural sites to behold while on your honeymoon, and don't forget the fishing. Places such as Gurney's Inn even offer wedding ceremony and reception accommodations if you'd like to get married on the beach, then honeymoon at the same location. Montauk, the laid-back and casual cousin of the Hamptons, is great for the down-to-earth couple looking for a place to kick back and relax. If you want to avoid the summer vacation rush, visit Montauk after Labor Day weekend.

Aspen, Colorado
For the quintessential fall vacation marked by the changing colors of the leaves, try Aspen from mid- to late-September. Not just for skiing, Aspen plays host to a number of festivals and special events year-round such as the Jazz Aspen festival during Labor Day weekend and Oktoberfest and Aspen Filmfest toward the end of the month. There are also an abundance of natural wonders to be enjoyed via hiking, rafting, golfing and visiting the Maroon Bells and Maroon Lake mountains, two of the most picturesque mountains in the country. Aspen also is a good place for dining, nightlife and people watching, as the area offers an interesting mix of the well-to-do, the working class and "ski bums." Be sure to stop at Woody Creek Tavern, an old favorite of late "gonzo" journalist Hunter S. Thompson, and the John Denver Sanctuary park.

Hawaii
Hawaii honeymoons may sound cliche to a lot of couples, but September is the month of Aloha Festivals, when the islands really shine. This statewide celebration of Hawaiian culture includes dances, a Royal Court, block parties, foods, crafts, flowers and music. Be sure to check out the Queen Lili'uokalani Music Festival and Concert, the Taste of Lahaina & Best of Island Music Festival, the Lanai Festivals of Aloha, the Waikiki Ho'olaule'a block party, and the floral parade. While you're there, check out the islands of Kauai, Molokai and Lanai for natural beauty, and Oahu and Maui for culture and art. Don't forget to go volcano watching on Hawaii's Big Island! Because most families will be back home for the start of school, lovebirds have the islands all to themselves.

Best tour operator: Apple Vacations! They INVENTED (for 40 years)the all inclusive vacation and they do it better than anybody.

They'll take care of everything - INCLUDING a wedding coordinator in the resort! Specializing in Caribbean - who wouldn't want to get married in paradise!!!? I travel tons and book everything to Mexico, Europe and the Caribbean through them - they ROCK.
