I understand that
"Bikini-girl" is what our society
labels as "hot". In a barely-there bikini, men and women
probably have fantasies of stripping her naked and having sex with
her right on that American Idol stage. I understand that she is
beautiful. But she's not Bathsheba, innocently bathing in the
moonlight, unaware that King David is admiring her naked beauty.
Instead, "Bikini-girl" is flaunting her body and her
sexuality--allowing people to drool over her and imagine her naked
in their beds. Most women and men stared at her, their mouths gaped
open, as she pranced around the stage and then gave Ryan Seacrest a
kiss. Obviously, she cannot sing for her life. And so she
uses her body as an object of attention--an asset that will allow
acceptance into the hearts, or rather beds, of men who can elevate
her status. She is objectifying herself, degrading her body,
beauty, and sexuality. She has put her body on display, as a source
of visual pleasure to those who gaze upon it. And this hurts women
who are fighting against society, fighting for the right to be
respected. In her pursuit for glory and fame, she is making life
worse for most other women in the world. We are fighting a losing
battle if we are not of one mind and spirit, especially when one of
us disbands and follows the path of greed.
Unconsciously, she is
sabotaging everything that feminists have done since the suffrage
movement.
