One Night Stand Survival Tips

By Linda Ray

According to a report by the American Psychological Association, both men and women engage in casual one-night sexual encounters because they are physically attracted to the other person. Men are more likely to carry out the sexual encounter knowing they have no interest in continuing the relationship with the women, while women tend to choose sex partners who may provide a future relationship. Whether intentional or not, a one-night stand can be invigorating or shameful and regretful. Know what steps to take to prepare for and survive a one-night stand.

Step 1
Think about your intentions before you leave the house for the party or club.
If you are in a relationship, consider the consequences if you allow yourself to participate in a one-night stand. Premeditation often accompanies one-night stands, whether you admit it or not. Knowing whether you are up to the accompanying emotions of a one-night stand can better help you make the decision if the opportunity presents itself.

Step 2
Carry a condom.
Men and women both should carry a condom in case they participate in a one-night stand to survive the physical consequences of sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS and pregnancy.

Step 3
Make sure that someone knows where you are going if you are having a one-night stand with a stranger
. Call a friend or text your therapist and tell them the location and time of your rendezvous. You will have a better chance of surviving a dangerous situation if someone checks up on you and your partner knows it.

Step 4
Talk to someone if you are feeling bad about yourself the next day.
Many one-night stands result in self-recrimination that can lead to depression or worse. A mental health professional can help you sort out the feelings and help you to understand why you may have sought out the one-night stand. Feelings following a one-night stand can help people identify and deal with unresolved issues.

Tips and Warnings

  • Learn from your mistakes. If you do not like how you felt after a one-night stand, do not have another one. Learning a lesson is a valuable tool and can help you deal with the guilt you may have following the encounter.
  • Limit your alcohol consumption when you go out if you have trouble controlling your sexual appetite when you drink. By staying sober, you can either avoid unwanted advances or choose a better partner for your one-night stand.

Text your therapist??? Really. Is this for sex addicts? This sounds like the APA is looking to get more clients for their therapists. Get real!

    4. Talk about it to someone else if you are feeling bad the next day. I am not promoting that having a one night stand is the way to go...however when it comes to the female race, they have, by their innate nature more expectations when it comes to the 'attachments' when intertwining with a male of their choice. The female mind is most definitely not as brazen, cold and disconnected to that of the male mind (except for those who have been betrayed by and with cruel intentions). Males can tolerate and slough off a lot more than the majority of women are able to. The most critical area to be aware of after having a one night stand is the 'guilt' and then having to deal with the incorrect gossips among everyone that helps to pile on the 'sores' and 'wounds' to a person's soul to have it feel even that much worse.

I thought the idea of texting a therapist about to inform him/her of a person's whereabouts was weird too. Who else should a woman text? Her cable guy? Hair dresser? Isn't this the kind of info that's private? Texting one or two friends to let them know where she's going is smart and safe. No one else needs to know, unless she wants to share that information.

Wearing a condom should be first on the list and birth control and everything else, and dental dams and all that, cuz for some reason, people think giving oral is so safe and never use condoms for those dealings because "rubber taste gross," you are kidding right? If you don't wear one for that, you might as well not wear one for vaginal intercourse, love those blistering pimples!

Calling the therapist seems kind of strange. I don't have one, but even if i did i don't want him/her knowing what the hell i'm doing! I did however participate in a one night stand 2 years ago, it was intended to be one anyway. It's weird cause we've been together for 2 years now and he's the most successful relationship i've ever had!
