Why we still think Miley Cyrus is a bad role model: Her pole dance

For a while now, "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus has made some unsettling career choices. Her racy MySpace photos were seen by all, she posed topless for "Vanity Fair," and her overall persona seems way too mature for her 16 years. At last night's Teen Choice Awards, Cyrus was the big winner of the evening, taking home six awards, including Choice Movie Actress Music/Dance, Choice TV Actress Comedy, Choice TV Show Comedy, Choice Music Single, Choice Summer Song and Choice Movie Hissy Fit (ugh). Miley can apparently do no wrong in the eyes of teens, and this really frightens us. Cyrus is their biggest role model, yet continues to act inappropriately.

This photo is of Miley Cyrus pole dancing on top of an ice cream cart during a performance of her latest single., "Party in the U.S.A." Let us reiterate: Cyrus is 16 years old and pole dancing at the Teen Choice Awards.

Sure, Cyrus isn't the first of her kind. Parents were up in arms when former Disney stars like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera broke on the scene in the late '90s. The difference is they were older than Cyrus, and upon reviewing their old acts, were not nearly as racy.

Britney Spears just worked a pole in her "Gimme More" video, but she's 27. Her first performance on the MTV Video Music Awards in 1999 showcased her bare midriff, yes, but also pants and sneakers--not a see-thru tank top, high heels and shorts with 1" inseam like Miley. The focus of the performance was her awesome choreography, not her sexiness. Don't believe me? Check out the routine below, where Britney was 17--one year older than Miley is now.

Do you think teen idols have become increasingly inappropriate? Do you think Miley Cyrus is a bad role model?

OH please, Miley Cyrus is not gonna raise my child, she entertains us and that's it. I raise my child, if I see my child acting or doing something that she saw Miley do that I think is not right, "I" will correct my child and let her know that you don't do that, Miley is on T.V. and they make her do that for attention and entertainment only. Simple.

I think Miley's as trapped as all the other Disney mill puppies and doubt greatly that she choreographed what she preformed. She's growing up, in an intensely public forum, and is subject to having every one of her akward teenage descisions scrutinized. Let her grow up and make a few of her own choices now that she's 2 years from being an adult. And if you don't like it, switch the channel and refuse to purchase her goods - problem solved!

Parents are the ones who allow role models for their children, you think Miley's not a good role model don't let your kids watch. Miley IS more mature than a normal 16 year old and it's not fair to judge so unkindly. She has more life experiences and is wiser than some twice her age of course she's going to come off as acting older. Besides these 12 year old girls can't be her fans forever that will end her career, she totally needs to expand her fan base!!! Just as Britney and Christina did to be able to still be around at 27.

i would have to agree with Slavxx. It's stupid her music sucks there are maybe two songs out of her hundereds of songs that are normal and make sense. I mean who in there right mind set would want to by a song called " Ice Cream Freeze (everybody lets chill.) unless your 2 or younger then to that kid that would be awsome, if not your Weird and Gay. :0

I agree with u. i dont think that she should be a role model cause of all shes done. shes only 16 but just because shes a teen shes got to remember that she has 8yr olds looking up to her. and she is trying to hard to be sexy. and she cant even sing.
