Walking School Bus

I bet you're wondering what the title of this post means.

Today is International Walk to School in the USA Day.

But walking to school nowadays isn't as easy as just stepping out the door and going.

Parents often cite safety issues as one of the primary reasons--if not the primary reason--they are reluctant to allow their children to walk to school.

Proper adult supervision should help reduce this worry for families who live within walking or bicycling distance to school.

Thirty years ago, 60% of children living within a 2-mile radius of a school walked or bicycled to school. Today, that number has dropped to less than 15%. Roughly 25% commute by school bus, and well over half are driven to/from school in vehicles. And back then, 5% of children between the ages of 6 and 11 were considered to be overweight or obese. Today, that number has climbed to 20%.

However, as I was researching this post, I discovered a new program that's working.

It's called Walking School Bus:

To see what’s happening in your state, the National Center for Safe Routes to School has a great map you can click to find out.

To provide a Walking School Bus for your child, it takes is a little organization, a few volunteers, and starting the day a little earlier each morning.

Is this something worth doing for your children? I think so, because

After all, it's about a healthy lifestyle!
