Tree house round-up

We talk about real houses a lot here on Cookie, but what about tree houses? They're so much cooler, after all! Here are some lucky children's backyard retreats...

"Back in 1991, my friend and I built this tree house. It's still hanging on in my parents' backyard. We built in drawers and two Volkswagen bus bucket seats. We ran an electrical cord up there, too. My mom thought it an eyesore, probably for good reason. But what about the cool factor?!" -- Randall, Sioux Falls, South Dakota (now living in Japan)

Shauna and her husband have this amazing tree house and swing in their Seattle backyard. They also just had a baby girl, Lucy. Congratulations!

"I built 'The Fort' for my daughter, 7, and twin sons, 4. My wife and I are both architects, and we worked on the form for a year before starting to build. It's up on posts so that it feels like it's in a tree. The kids love playing house in it, and their friends' reactions are quite spectacular. One girl's mother remarked, 'Wow, your kids' treehouse has a better view than our home does.'" -- Fernand, Shoreline, Washington

"This tree house, in Oak Brook, Illinois, belongs to my aunt and little cousins. The room is 8' by 10', and there's a trap door for an entrance." -- Luca, Chicago.

"When I bought this house, the tree house was certainly a selling point for my kids, Peter, 10 and Grace, 7. One afternoon, their babysitter helped them make water balloons, and I suggested that we go play in the backyard. Pop. Splash! It was a good time." -- Jeff, North Carolina

"Our son and daughter love the treehouse at Grammy and Gramp's house in Ohio--especially since it's wired for electricity. They look forward to spending the days there." -- Jonathan and Lacey, Austin, Texas

I love treehouses! Unluckily, we've got nothing but scrawny trees in our backyard.

For now, I've set my sights on a treehouse hotel. There's one in Southern Oregon that looks awesome...

I wanted a tree house when I was a kid, but unfortunately my parents didn't have the time or the skills for stuff like that. Hopefully when My hubby and I have children, we will be able to build a tree house for them. I am so looking forward to those days.

Those are pretty cool. We didn't have a tree house, but my dad did build my brother and me a two story club house of sorts. He wanted it to be authentic to the period he was trying to replicate. He modeled it after the forts of early-American times, so instead of nails, he pieced the entire thing together with wooden pegs, and it's still there, 20 years later. My brother and I loved it. Downstairs is just an earthen floor covered with wood chips. There is a ladder built into the wall going up through a trap door, which we could open with a rope on a pulley system. The door would stop against a door stop, so it wouldn't crash against the floor upstairs. And then upstairs, we laid out carpet and had an antique roll top desk, corner table, and a radio. My dad even hooked up electricity leading from the house through an extension cord. We could also lock the trap door so no one else could come up by inserting a peg into a hole just above the door. I slept out there a couple times in a sleeping bag, but my mom was nervous about rabid raccoons climbing up, so my dad put netting around the openings below the fort-like, four-sided triangle roof. That also prevented my younger brother from jumping out of the fort. He was the adventurous type.
