Should we ban fast food near schools?

A new study in California shows a strong link between teen obesity and the proximity of fast food restaurants to schools.

According to an article in the LA Times, the presence of a fast food chain like McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut within walking distance of school (about 530 feet or less) resulted in a 5.2 percent increase in incidence of student obesity when compared with students attending schools not near restaurants.

OK, I know. Obesity can be caused by lots of things including genetics, lack of exercise, and nutrition, but some researchers believe that fast food proximity to schools is a contributing factor. I may have eaten Taco Bell from time to time back in the day. Those spots were a hangout because it was cheap, fast, and (as they say) close to the school.

But the rate of diabetes and heart disease among young people is growing, so this is serious. State and local governments in California (and across the country) have started to ban certain foods in schools including soda, junk food, trans fats, and even bake sales. Should they go ahead and ban the restaurants that serve this kind of stuff, too?

Some CafeMoms feel parents are the ones who should teach their kids good eating habits, so they would make the right choices.

Is it enough to teach nutrition at home and in schools? Should fast food be banned near schools? What do you think should be done?

Even if parents teach kids these things, who says they are going to listen.

No...they could stop on the way home!!

Everyone wants to ban, ban, ban...how silly. People need to take responsibility for their own actions, including high school students. Would we then ban establishments that sell liquor close to schools (that would include grocery stores)..the list goes on and on.

Few days ago my teenage son told me, "mom, I am so glad that we eat fruit and vegetables too as part of our meals, I can not believe that some kids don't even know how salad or a fruit taste like and they don't eat it"!!!! So here you go people, even though the fast food is available we still can teach our children good eating habits, and self control skills. Remember, you are the parent who are preparing your children to manage there future and life by themselves!

Being a great-grandmother, the mother of 5, and granny of 6, I have experienced many facets of (especially) teenage habits of eating. They are not good! With so many food allergies and obesity, and tooth decay and just plain 'bad health', I wish that parents would stop trying to make everything easy for their kids. Please, just say NO. You are supposed to be teaching your children discipline! Food is one of the largest areas of a persons life where you must have discipline! Get uncomfortable, Parents! Stand up to these kids. (Of course, you may have to discipline yourself, also). I pray for you all. Make an effort to do something for yourselves that is really worthwhile. Bless you.

When I was attenting school, we looked forward to eating lunch. They had some of the best food ever. There were certain days that were better than other days. pizza, burgets, taco, etc. are not lunches. They are snatchs

Greens, beans, corn bread, ect., are what are better for them. The other foods are just snatch and after a very short time, they are ready to eat "real food" Think over what is best for the students or how lazy thr cooks are to coom these foods. I lot of them are prepackage. Thank you,God bless and have a blessed dat

What has happened to personal responsibility? Do we want to regulate everything around us so that we never have a chance to make a wrong decision? I'm sorry, but we have already handed over way too many freedoms to regulation. And it starts innocently with questions such as the one posed here. Wasn't there something about a road being paved with good intentions?
