Pregnancy and The H1N1 Vaccine (Swine Flu)
user

Due to several cases of the H1N1 virus the cdc is going to
release a vaccine for the H1N1. The shot will be given in two
series. Two weeks after receiving your first shot you have to get
the 2nd shot to make it completely effective. Many pregnant women
trust their OBGYN but they do not trust the shot for H1N1.
If you are pregnant are you going to get the H1N1 shot, why or why
not?
If you are not pregnant are you going to get the shots?
Now they researchers are saying that the 1st shot is strong
enough and a 2nd shot is not needed.

Hey, girl! I miss you. I hope things are going well with the new job :)
I think I will get the regular flu shot this year, but not the swine one. It's so new that I am worried about the side effects. Sometimes, people are more likely to die from a new vac than the actually disease.
I don't know. I don't know that much about medical stuff. What are you going to do?

I am at that crossroads right now and really don't know what to do. I am almost four months along and my ob wants me to get the shots. I have never had the flu, never had any flu shots either. I am insanely healthy (I don't even recall the last time I had the sniffles), I exercise 6x a week and eat healthy. My concern is that I will get sick from the shot or have a bad reaction since it is so foreign to my body to get a shot. I am no fool, I understand that being pregnant, my immune system is now compromised and could now get the flu, which would put my baby at risk. I just am extremely worried as to how my body will react.

Ladies, why not take a look at the CDC website...
http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/pregnancy/
And an answer to your question:
"Q: Why does CDC recommend that pregnant women receive the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine?
A. It is important for a pregnant woman to receive the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine as well as a seasonal influenza vaccine. A pregnant woman who gets any type of flu is at risk for serious complications and hospitalization. Pregnant women who are otherwise healthy have been severely impacted by the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus (formerly called “novel H1N1 flu” or “swine flu”). In comparison to the general population, a greater proportion of pregnant women infected with the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus have been hospitalized. In addition, severe illness and death has occurred in pregnant women. Six percent of confirmed fatal 2009 H1N1 flu cases thus far have been in pregnant women while only about 1% of the general population is pregnant. While hand washing, staying away from ill people, and other steps can help to protect pregnant women from influenza, vaccination is the single best way to protect against the flu."

If you get the vaccine, it will protect you from the H1N1, especially because H1N1 has hit pregnant women MUCH harder than many other groups of individuals. Listen to your OB.

Pregnant women worry that it may hurt there baby. It is a new vaccine and has not been studied to show long term affects on the fetus.
