Oh No, He Didn't! The Things People Say to Pregnant Women: An iVillage Top 10

We asked iVillagers, "What's the weirdest, rudest or most oblivious thing anyone has said to you while you were pregnant?" Some of the responses were flat-out funny , and some were enough to turn your hair white—read 'em and weep.

1. A woman at the pool said, "You must be having a girl—they say that girl babies steal their mother's beauty."

2. When we announced our pregnancy, my father-in-law said, "It's about time, we were beginning to wonder if you needed a biology lesson!" We'd been trying for a year, and I'd been on fertility drugs for six months.

3. Last week the FedEx guy said, "After you, your load is bigger than mine."

4. A week before I gave birth to my first baby,                               jupiterimages/getty images
these two snooty women walked up to me
and asked me to my face, "Why aren't you wearing maternity clothes? Do you not believe in them?" And then they walked off laughing at me. I was wearing maternity clothes! They had just stopped fitting at that point!

5. This old lady at Target looked at me and shook her head. She said, "You young girls need to see there are other things to do in the winter, and you won't end up in your situation." I told her I was in my mid 20s and had been married for 3 years and that my "situation" was actually a blessing!

6. My sister-in-law told me today that if I go into labor on Christmas Eve, she will "just have to miss it" because she has to go to the mall for the sales.

7. My father-in-law said, "Real women don't need pain medication during labor." I replied, "Real men know when to keep their big mouths shut."

8. When I was getting out of the shower the other day, my hubby said I look like a pregnant orangutan! Then he said he didn't mean it in a bad way! How can you mean that in a good way?

9. On the morning of my 20-week ultrasound (which I was understandably anxious about), I told a woman at work that I was going later that day. She proceeded to tell me detail by detail about her miscarriage 17 years ago.

10. When I was dealing with morning sickness and fatigue, my coworker had the nerve to say, "I'm not sure I want to be seen with you the way you look." And last Friday, she told me some days she wonders if I've bothered to brush my hair, because it looks like I'm having sex in the parking lot before work!

When I was 28 and expecting my 2nd child, a co-worker shook her head and said "Your too young to be having a 2nd baby." I said "I'm 28 and its no one's business." She apologized embarrassed and said she thought I was only 20 at the most. Now I am 35 expecting my 5th child and I hear realtives telling me to get my tubes tied and other jokes about having kids. Funny thing is they don't support me and my family, my husband does and he loves having this many kids.

When my mom was at about 36 weeks with me she picked up my paternal great grandfather from the airport. He was really getting up there in age and I guess he had forgotten that she was pregnant because he took one look at her and said "You're getting a little plump aren't ya." She said at the time she was a little offended, but now we all laugh about it because at 36 weeks who wouldn't mind being seen at a little plump.

When i was pregnant every one in the darn world wanted to comment that i was big. Of course I'm big (Treashur weighed 8lbs and 14.4 oz)I's not like i didnt feel a big horse already, but to be reminded about it every day is just a shame. So one day when someone decided to tell me that i was BIG.(who was really overweight herself) i said " I'm pregnant, what's your excuse" lol She still hasn't spoke to me since. lol

Don't you just love how everyone thinks they can just spout out any opinion about you when you are pregnant? I had the old women stares as well( I look younger than i am) and after my son was born, a nurse at the pediatrician actually said she was surprised that I cared for my son so much?! I asked her why she said that and she replied," the young ones usually don't care." I was 28.

I was pregnant with my first and only child after 8 years of trying. I was at my niece's parent/teacher conference (my niece lives with me). My niece's teacher was asking me about my baby and I said finally through in-vitro we were lucky enough to get pregnant. She says to me her friend had invitro and the baby died at 7 mths. I was about 6 mths at the time. I was speechless. What a stupid thing to say to someone. I don't think I heard anything she said the rest of the conference..

Someone once told me, "Oh you're pregnant? I thought you were just fat!"
