Okay, so today my sister and I are splitting parents and doctors appointments. Good gravy, I'm learning so much about the medical profession. Yesterday, mom and I took dad to see a doc at SLU about cutting edge ratiation called the cyber knife. My sister attended the Fragile X gene conference held in St. Louis and today she's taking mom to the post heart attack check ups while I take dad to the pulmonologist. (not bad for a teacher and a beautician) I'm even starting to understand doctor speak and becoming an advocate for "put that in English, please".
Tomorrow, back to school for meetings. I'm not sure how we'll make it all work then, but I have a feeling we'll figure it out. We're stronger than we know.

Report AbuseIts great to hear you and your sibling helping your parents. It sounds like your family are very close. That is something in this day and age. I applaud you & your sister. I'm sure there is alot out there that are close(just very rare). Helping each other(siblings or even friends) and parents. Your a angel. I'm sure you feel great about yourself and helping your parents and you should. We're all only here for a little while. Let your parents know you love them. I think they already do know you love them. When you were growing up they were there for you and know you there for them. Keep up the good work.

Report AbuseGood Morning Teacher Girl,oh good grief, amend that--good afternoon! Sounds like a full schedule. Did that information I sent to you on cyber knife help? My Dr friend was asking last weekend and I didn't know. It is very new here in town (like everything else cutting edge) and he has several patients he would recommend the procedure to if he feels it works. Let us know!!! I have other non-medical friends who are too afraid of their Dr's to ask for a translation to english,as for it to be written down (I guess they don't mind Dr thinking they have bad memories but don't want him to think they are not able to process verbal Dr. speech) Then, they call me and ask for a translation and once they understand, they want me to advise as to what to do---Ask the Doctor! Ok,thats what I want to say but what I really say is do whatever the Dr. has recommended and next time--stop him and ask HIM for a translation. I remember, just out of school, talking to people and using terms and abbreviations that were natural to me but greek to them,as I was forcefully reminded by my dad with his "Speak English".lol
I know how hard you and your sister's have worked this summer to help your parents regain their health and /or comfort and as you say--you will work out their schedules. Is Cyber Knife more than one session?I am sorry that all the help I can offer are my good thoughts and of course my prayers! May God guide your footsteps and the words of your mouth that you may give comfort and blessings to all you encounter. With love, Irish

Report AbuseYes, the cyber knife information was helpful. It will involve driving about an hour to St. Louis for roughly 5 sessions. In one, they insert gold "seeds" that direct the radiation. The next visit, they do a new scan to make sure the seeds are in the tumor and finally they do three 2 & 1/2 to 3 hours sessions of radiation. That's it and you're done. Since this is the only treatment dad qualifies for, given his FXTAS, I hope it's everything we need. I'll blog more as I know more. Thanks as always for your concerns and prayers! You are our online momma, Irish, and we love you for it!!
