User post: Has celebrity worship gone too far?

I am standing in the grocery store check-out line behind a woman and her young daughter. The girl is browsing over the magazines when she exclaims, Oh my gosh, I love Heidi! Her and Seal make a great couple!

I think this girl was about seven.

I was a bit taken aback. I think when I was seven I was watching Nickelodeon, eating Snack Paks and had absolutley no interest in a fashion magazine or who was on the cover.

But, I think what I was most frightened about was that I was about to say to the girl, Oh my word! I know! I just love Project Runway, too! Did you see Heidi in the VS Fashion Show?! So amazing! She is perfect!

But then I thought, is Heidi sitting around talking about me? I think not...In fact, she has no idea who I am. Yet this seven year old girl, myself, and millions of other Americans know everything about her. Not only just Heidi, we know everything about almost EVERYONE in Hollywood today.

Yet, do we know who sits on the Supreme court? Who is on our local school board? The name of our governor's wife? Shoot, I don't.

So I ask the question...has celebrity worship gone too far? Do we care more about these people who, let's face it, are only important because they are on tv more than we care about things that really impact us?

I love love love the point you are making with this article. It's sad that most Americans know more about the cast of the Hills than who is sitting on the Supreme Court making desicions about our rights and lives. It's embarassing, actually, how dumbed down our society has become. We need to shift the focus to our education system before it's too late.

You're right. We obsess over people who have no idea who we are, and have no interest in us other than securing our entertainment dollar to spend on...let's face it...their non-essential, marginally talented work. While the real heros like teachers, pioneering scientists and doctors find very little recognition, while making our lives more meaningful and longer.

Celebrities gain attention, not so much for their work nowadays, but for their addictions, outrageous financial spending and promiscuous bedhopping. Why do we want to watch this, and let our kids watch it, idolize it and aspire to live that kind of life, instead of making an actual difference in the world? These people are just attention w----s, and we are letting them get our UNDIVIDED attention 24/7, which has made US addicts ourselves, demanding more and more infomation about their privledged, almost useless lives.

I agree people spend way too much time following stars. Like that s--- with brit and miley was really getting on my last nerves. I mean who the f--- cares. Can we focus on trying to find a cure for aids and cancer? Seriously no one gives a f--- when I pass out or run outside in my underwear so why should we care when a rich person does it. They are just people people. Get it together. Worry about being able to keep your job or buying your house back.

I believe that celebrity worship has gone far. I mean i am to a big fan of heidi and i do know that she is the host of project runway, and i do catch myself thinking about all of this but i still can manage to know who our supreme court is. i live here in palm springs and there was a case that i went to go watch not that long ago. Me as a 17 year old teenager who likes to do typical teenage stuff and go to movies, or just chill with my friends realize that some teachers or doctors don't get recognized as much as they should. I Mean if it were not for teachers i would not be able to write all of this.

Celebrities have something we think we do not have, much love. I would not call it love but hey the l word is thrown around more often these days. I think we all know why we watch celebs, cause they have a life we wish we had. I wish I had the money and not the fame but hey thats jus me, but yes most do and yes I think it has gone a bit to far. I have always thought that though, when I watch them it is like watching dumb asses gone wild ya know, Not all of them but most are just dumb, and even more retarded to idolize. Make all the political poeple beautiful and throw in some sex scandals maybe poeple would know more about them right? It's sucks it has to be that way but it is.

I couldn't agree more. I love my gossip mags, but am I ever ashamed when I think of how little I know about politics or local news. We need to become more interested in things that are important/affects us, not just whose dating who or is wearing what.

I TRULY think you have a point, I think celeb worship has gone too far, though I have absolutley no room to talk, I'm a huge fan of Robert Pattinson and I usually start random conversations with my own mother about how Kristin Sterwart turned him down and how mad it made me, i feel that celeb worship should cool down.
