Of Noynoy Aquino for President and Typhoon Ketsana Rants

user

Monster storm Ketsana (locally known as Ondoy) battered the whole of Metro Manila, Philippines last Saturday, September 26, 2009. It poured a month’s worth of rain in only 24 hours and left many cities flooded, and so many people homeless.

The crisis that the monster brought to our country meant different things to different people. For Gawad Kalinga heroes, it automatically calls for volunteerism and providing help to the victims. For those who were spared from the horror, it meant another reason to live life to the fullest and be thankful for the life they are given. On the other hand, some politicians in the country see this calamity, nightmare, or whatever you call it, as an opportunity to, what else, send out campaign paraphernalia in the form of relief bags with their faces plastered on it.

It really makes me sick to my stomach at how these opportunistic crocodiles use the calamity and the vulnerability of the victims to their advantage. In the first place, the people are now suffering because of these sick politicians who think of nothing but themselves. They were slow to act. Gawad Kalinga was even the first to come to the rescue even before the NDCC mobilized its men to save hapless victims trapped in their houses. In a manner of speaking, government help just came in to collect the bodies.

Okay, enough of these rants. Let us look at the brighter side for a moment. Despite the dirt on those politicians who shamelessly politicize the whole situation, there are still honest ones that opt to really help the people instead of announcing their efforts on national TV. They work silently and in that way, they are able to help the people who are in need most of the assistance.

Noynoy Aquino is one of the better politicians who came to the rescue of the victims. He is helping in the efforts of Gawad Kalinga and even woke up and fly out to affected areas early in the morning. He even donated all the funds and pledges he was able to gather through the help of Tuloy Pnoy, a Noynoy Aquino for President movement. His family even sold houses and properties to give more donations to those who are in need at this very dark moment in our history.

I used to be skeptic about Noynoy’s presidency, but with the sincerity that he has been demonstrating, I have been a converted supporter. It is indeed rare to have a leader that has a heart for the people. One cannot gain it through academic achievements or family reputation. It cannot be faked either. It is just something that you either have don’t have. In this case, Noynoy Aquino does not even have to try to show it. You can see it is in his aura, his stature, and in his lifestyle.

I just had an epiphany. I say if we really want change, we need to really choose a leader who should not only have the political experience or capabilities to lead, but also the ability and charisma to unite the people. I say Noynoy Aquino for President is not at all a bad idea.
