My Own Walden

user

The house in which we live was for many years a rental for college students. Once upon a time, the yard was probably semi-organized and tended but over the years has become an overgrown mess. As gardening is not one of my strong suits, I have not spent much time making it any better. I whack at the gi-normous bushes every now and again but it just seems to to make them look like they have bush mohawks because I cannot reach the 12 foot branches in the middle.

Perhaps I should rename the house "Walden" and insist it is a nature preserve and bird sanctuary. I could proclaim honeysuckle as endangered and therefore encourage its rampant growth over everything in the yard. To my neighbors who complain my preserve makes their manicured lawns look bad, I will recite the verses of Emerson and Thoreau who maintained untamed nature is the best evidence of God on earth. Do you think "No using God to justify not cutting your grass" is in the neighborhood covenants?

To make matters worse, I am deathly afraid of snakes and allergic to poison ivy. And you just know both of those demons are lurking in the mass of flora and fauna. I bet there is an anaconda in the pampas grass right now just licking its chops waiting for me to come near enough for it to eat me. Then what would my children do?

I will be brave and forge ahead into the unknown wilderness that is my front yard. Wish me luck....

UPDATE: My bush nemesis now has a buzz cut! It took THREE HOURS for one bush and there are still 18 more to go. My enthusiasm for communing with nature has worn off. Going inside to call my friend with a chainsaw and make myself a martini.

Agree with you totally on the snakes and poison ivy............whew!

I love country living. When we bought this house in Maine my husband asked if I wanted him to put down new grass......heck no, I want a "country lawn" full of dandelions and pine needles. Brings me back to my childhood on the farm before we moved to the city. It's like COMING HOME.................................
