I don't think Sarah Palin should blow kisses to the audience

By Nataly Kogan, from Work It, Mom!

I know I am a few weeks late but I can't shake the image of Sarah Palin blowing a kiss to the audience before the VP debate. Oh, and winking repeatedly during the debate itself.

As I watched her do it, I cringed. I am no career expert but I know enough to understand the importance of body language in the workplace. If you want the job, start with a firm handshake. If you want to be heard, state your ideas sitting confidently and upright on the edge of your chair instead of slumping down and making your statement a question.

And if you want to be taken seriously by your coworkers and clients — or say, by 70 million people watching you on TV — don’t wink during a heated political discussion and don’t blow kisses to people you don’t know.

Now, I am no dummy. I know that this extremely casual body language, manners as well as peppering speeches with colloquial phrases like “You betcha!” is both part of Ms. Palin’s personality and the image that she is aiming to build of someone who is one of us, a regular person who just happens to be running for Vice President. But I don’t buy it. If you’re running for office you should not sound and act like a regular person in a casual setting. Because you’re not a regular person, you’re a Vice Presidential candidate and when you’re out there on some international mission, talking to world leaders as an American representative, I definitely don’t want you to act the way you might around your family.

Sorry to lecture, Ms. Palin, but after seeing women sabotage their success in the workplace by the way they talk and hold themselves, I care about this stuff. Fair or not, women have to jump over a higher bar just to be on par with men in professional settings, which means there’s no room for overly-girly body language or expressions that make you sound juvenile. When I was starting my career I was lucky to have one woman boss who took me shopping for a serious suit. “How you look matters, whether you like it or not,” she told me as I invested in my first-ever (and last-ever) Ann Taylor skirt suit.

Your suits are fine but in my not-so-humble opinion, you need to act as serious as they look.

(For the record, I tried to find images of other VP and Presidential candidates blowing kisses and was only able to locate this one of Rudy Guliani doing it during a rally. Still wrong, in my opinion.)

I wholly agree with you. I have nothing against Sarah Palin as a person, but her inability to conduct herself as a potential world leader chagrins me. Perhaps she's a genius powerhouse under that act, but I can't even begin to consider voting for her ticket since proper conduct is clearly not a priority. I also don't believe that our leaders are supposed to be like the average person-they should be smarter, better rounded, and able to conduct themselves appropriately in a multitude of situations, amongst other things!

Governor Palin's "everyday people" act seems to appeal mostly to those voters who seem to resent the educational achivement of Barack Obama.

When you have aspirations as a leader on the world stage, you conduct yourself with dignity, class, and yes, restraint, still exuding charm, because that is your likeablity factor, if you will, charm is not sex appeal.

The "Sex-kitten" routine of Governor Palin just doesn't display authority and sound judgement on the world stage, because winking and blowing kisses is what Marilyn Monroe did while visiting the troops overseas, not running for political office.

By the way, if we're getting picky (and you are) then shouldn't it be Mrs. Palin. If you want to blame someone for her image, blame the press. Every other day, images of her shoes (and legs and backside) are posted on "news" websites. If I was running for VP, my first instinct would be to go to a fancy men's suit store and buy the best suit I could (I'd have to charge it though), but then I'd be an elite snob. If I picked a Macy's suit, people would say, "Is that how much he respects this position?" There's no winning with image, because image is NOT real. It's a facade, and you pick the facade that someone advises you will get you more votes (like supporting tax breaks while promising to "redistribure wealth" something which requires more tax money).

Along with eliminating private campaign financing, maybe we should issue each candidate the same selection of suit brands to wear. Perhaps then someone would actually bother to look at their qualifications. I doubt it though.

OMG. You feminists want women to be men.

What about Obama's credibility to be President. Is he even American ? He could have fooled me. What about his quals ?

Well, it's seems the men don't agree with you, I guess they like it.

But I agree with you, I think everything you said was so true.

And Sarah Palin makes me cringe anyways.

Ben B - feminism has NADA to do with women wanting to be men. Please educate yourself.
