Women save more than men!

shopping-savelikeme.jpg
Not to dis our gender, but I tend to think of us as the ones with the shopping gene. Not that men don't spend money as I wrote here in my old NYT column a while back. Women just seem to spend more, or more frequently.

Not anymore! The recession might be making savers of us all, according to a new online survey by Pricegrabber.com. (Sadly, I can't link to the survey because it's not on their website--or not that I can find. I have the PDF.) The June 2009 Consumer Behavior Report: Economic Trends in Consumer Spending found that:
  • Women economize more than men.   A higher percentage of women reported that they made an effort to spend less on dining out (74%), entertainment (72%), and purchasing online (55%) or purchasing in-store (69%) as compared to men.
And speaking of wants versus needs:
    • Men see flat screen TVs and dishwashers as more of a necessity than most women.
Of course, women view that extra pair of sandals as a necessity. So we all have our issues.

That is definitely not true. Grant it that women's clothing outnumber men's clothing 12-to-1, sales are much more abundant. That is because women spend 12 times more on clothes than men. Sale-savvy or not, women still are spending more than men regardless of the fact that they are saving by looking at discounted clothing. The fact that you saved 30% doesn't mean you saved anything, because you are still spending money.

Women save more than men, cause men are stupid! Women take advantage of men, i know many women that have 10 or more guy friends that one will take them to breakfast another to lunch and another to dinner. She has men buy her tires and go shopping and all her income goes directly in the bank. Men need to stop being stupid and go dutch! Dont spend your hard earned money on a woman that is using you, save it, take your summer trip to the Philippines and you will have the time of your life for hardly anything more than feeding yourself and room and board. American woman are nothing but users and manipulators and all of them should be required to spend a month, in an Al Qaida Camp.

Actaully, this is true for me. I used to do A LOT of online shopping since my job isn't busy enough. Lately I have been saving my money (trying to move) and I keep wondering "Where did this money do before?" I can save about $400 a month and before I was paying that all to credit cards. It's hard not to shop, but you have to think of whats more important and the price of things.

Sol_el_Guapo and m_walkerusa have obviously never met a woman who knows that buying stuff on sale does not equate to saving money if you really don't need what you buy in the first place.

I am a woman. I don't shop for clothes every week. In fact, I spend maybe $400 per year on clothing and shoes-- most of it on replacing things that are worn out. I also don't buy clothes, shoes, dvds, books, or video games at major stores. I buy most stuff online and I wait for the games, dvds, and books to be available used through amazon or ebay.

What men often fail to realize is that that big screen hdtv is a $1000 expense all in one shot, the video games they insist on buying several times a month go for $50-$75 each, and the dvd per week runs $20-$30 as well. Throw in the NFL Sunday cable package for $280, the MLB, NHL, and NBA cable package for $169 EACH, the College football cable package for $120. That amounts to about $4000 of unnecessary spending for men and it's about equivalent to what a shop-a-holic Barbie woman would spend on clothes, shoes, and make-up if she has a job that will that kind of spending.

So, honestly, men spend just as much as women and they spend just as selfishly. They just spend it on things that leave very little to show for itself at the end-- except a pile of watched dvds and beaten video games they will never touch again. Think how much they could save with a blockbuster membership and renting that stuff.

I have yet to meet a man who actually knows how to save money. In college, I had an apartment by myself, 2 part time jobs, and still managed to save $2000 in six months. I've yet to meet a man who can do the same. And, I've never been lucky enough to run into a man who wasn't a cheapskate who didn't want to go 'dutch.' Jerks.

m_walkerusa is absolutely right. Based upon my personal experience, a lot of women make a lot of noise about how "nurturing" and "caring" they are, how they're natural parents, how "oppressed" they are, etc., etc., etc.,

But it ends up just being that. Just noise. I'm not interested in what people want me to THINK they are; I'm only interested in what they actually ARE. The real backbones of society (male AND female) just get on with doing what they have to do.

        I agree with Fools..

Women spend less more frequently...while men spend more less frequently.

It's pretty much the same in the end. Contentious gender division on the subject isn't what I consider productive journalism.

I am currently off work for health problems and will be living on my savings here for a month or 2, and I have been a saver for a long time thank goodness. My expenses will be coming out of my emergency fund. My significant other is trying to encourage me to buy a new lawn mower. Currently I have other issues to worry about such as food, shelter and medicine. Somehow mowing the lawn isnt that much of a concern. The old mower works fine.

My dad lived thru the depression and while he was in the service, bought his mother and sister a cow. The cow gave them dairy and when it stopped producing milk, they ate it. How thrifty.
