Why I still drive a 1995 Saturn

By Terry Hernon McDonald

I know people feel sorry for me when I drive up in my reliable old Saturn, but I’ve been hard pressed to give it up. It gets 30 miles to the gallon. It’s only been to the shop several times (I drove it home from the dealership fifteen years ago Monday).

I have to admit, sometimes I let people’s perceptions get to me, and I think I should finance a new Mercedes. And then I come to my senses. My little Saturn has been a good and loyal friend. I took my babies home from the hospital in it. Why would ever I get rid of it?

Today I can’t drive it because they tell me I’ve worn out a piston, and it’ll need to be replaced. So I’ll replace it and keep driving that car until it dies.

I live in a smallish house by today’s standards, too. If it were any bigger, I’d have a hard time maintaining it (I like a clean house, but I loathe any kind of housework except cooking), and I’m happy with the manageable mortgage. Still, I feel sad sometimes when I drive up to my friends’ McMansions and wonder if I’m doing something wrong.

But , according to a book I read many years ago (and should definitely read again), entitled The Millionaire Next Door, I’m doing a couple of things right. The Millionaire Next Door famously exposed the spending habits of the truly rich, as opposed to the seemingly rich.

(Full disclosure here: I still have a bit of credit card debt, which flies in the face of everything I learned from The Millionaire Next Door.)

I read this morning on Free Money Finance that the book’s author, Thomas Stanley, has come out with another book, Stop Acting Rich, which I’ll definitely check out.

Should make me feel very smug about living in a small house and driving a Saturn.

I'll definitely have to check that book out. I too drive a 11 year old car that runs just fine (albiet a few minor problems) but i'm very happy not to have a car payment and my minimal house is just fine along with the minimal mortgage payment. Why spend more just to look rich.

I love my Saturn! It's a 2007 so hopefully I'll get to enjoy it for years to come. I was watching Oprah yesterday, and she talked to two women from Denmark. They are some of the happiest people in the world, but the average family appears to live in an apartment roughly the size of the one I currently live in by myself. It's really got me rethinking upgrading to a bigger place. One of the biggest points they made was that they definitely have less "stuff" than Americans, and they like it that way.

Definitely the way to go. While my friends are all buying two-story houses in the burbs, my fiance and I are looking into a two-bedroom condo in the city. We like living in apartments, where maintenance is someone else's responsibility, there's no lawn to mow or rake, and everything we want to do - like movies, theaters, restaurants, and bars - are all within walking distance. Who needs all that space and responsibility hanging over their heads? Give us a sweet little condo and we'll keep our free time, thank you!

My uncle recommended me that book a few years ago as well.

I get your point though, about living beneath your means and the purpose is to be financially secure as opposed to drowning in debt to appear rich. Good stuff.

Ahh I had a 1995 Saturn, But it needed more work than I was willing to do. I sold it to a teenage boy for my 2000 VW beetle. It is 9 yrs old but I love it too much to get a new car! It has character, that just can't be replaced with a new car!

My Saturn is 9 years old. Still purring. All I've done is replace the battery and buy new tires. I don't have a fancy stereo or GPS or Bluetooth, but the AC and heat work just fine. Easy to find a parking place, too. No one is interested in stealing it either.

In the US, the average home is 2500 sq feet. In the UK the average home ranges from 1500-900 sq.feet. Germany has the smaller homes ( average) in Europe but they are designed for functional living. Our home is 1562 sq feet. We once lived in a 4480 sq foot , two story home, three car garage. You cannot imagine what we paid just in utilities and taxes. So, we down sized four years ago. We had a garage sale and got rid of " stuff". Much happier in my little cottage now.

I drive a 2000 Saturn that has been a wonderful and reliable car and bought a 2 bedroom house (what more could I need with just two people) that I am very happy and comfortable with. Sometimes I too think that I should have sprung for the posh condo or the fancy car, but then I remember that I don't have to worry about paying my mortgage every month or managing a car payment. Sometimes I think I should finance brand new furniture or gadgets or dump the cost on a credit card, but then I remember how awesome it is to be putting money away and living credit card debt free. To be honest, the people I know who strain to buy all the nice material things are some of the most stressed out, least happy people I know.

Who cares? Lots of people drive their old cars, you're not special.
