User post: How do you turn an unproductive day into a more productive one?

OK I know I said I wasn't going to complain about the heat, but today it finally got to me and I had to take a long nap (it's a good thing I work from home!). It's after 3 already and I've hardly gotten anything done. Looks like I'm going to be making up for it again late tonight!

Do you guys have days like that, when it seems like everything is working against you to get anything done? What do you do about it?

Thanks!

there are days where you do need to allow your body to rest. if you find yourself doing this every day, then thats seems to be a problem.

Well I obviously needed some rest today! My husband and I have not slowed down since the heat wave began and I think it's getting to both of us! Hopefully it will be over soon; thanks for the comment!

Take vitamins. Drink water. Rest for a bit, then come back to your work. Don't work too hard! ;)

Go outside for 5 minutes (find some shade seriously hot), walk around, sit, rest, think, pray, and come back in and start working again. My friend gave me this advice calling it the 5 minute vacation. ;)

if you have a very important task to finish. Then what you need to do is have a cup of joe to recharge your batteries, then start doing that task at once.

However, if you there's none. Then I don't think its a sin to put your feet up and enjoy your die lying on the bed or on the couch.

First of all, don't fret about not accomplishing all of your tasks. Prioritize. Make sure that the important things get taken care of. How do you finish those? I tend to do something that involves sitting for 20 mins and then devote the next 20 mins to something more active. Before I know it, I've accomplished quite alot without feeling that I've over exerted myself.

Forgive yourself for having a little down time. We all need it and none of us get enough of it. But I agree with Catherine M: if there's something important, have some caffeine and get cracking. If it's something that can wait, let it wait! If you don't have the energy to physically do something, make a list that breaks your big tasks down into smaller ones. At least you did something towards accomplishing your goals.

When it seems like I am working against the tide, I just stop myself, take a deep breath and literally stop everything. I wash my hands and face and sit on the patio, and kind of "give up" in a way.....not going with the flow is not a good way of living my days. Sometimes I'm just trying too hard and am way too hard on myself. Who says my "to do" list has to get done today or ever? Well I say it does so that means I can stop looking at it too.

When I feel in a slump I force myself into the shower. The standing, scrubbing, and steam from the water (no matter how hot the day) wakes me up from the deepest blah of a day.
