When asked if she reads any mommy blogs -- like, for instance, this very site -- Uma Thurman says, "I feel a little guilty." Here's why.
Single Mom Seeking: Although Thurman plays a mommy blogger in the new film "Motherhood," she explains: "I didn't get a chance to get into the blogging world -- and I feel so badly telling you that. I apologize."
Thurman -- who received an Academy Award nomination for "Pulp Fiction" -- plays Eliza Welch, a former fiction writer-turned-mom-blogger with her own site, "The Bjorn Identity."
Eliza's dilemma might hit home for many of you: She has put her writing aspirations on hold to raise her two children.
In the meantime, her good-natured but absent-minded husband (played by Anthony Edwards, best known for his character Dr. Mark Greene on "ER") seems tuned out to his wife's conflicts, not to mention basic domestic reality. Her best friend Sheila (Minnie Driver) understands this -- and Eliza -- all too well.
In real life, Thurman is raising her son and daughter in New York City. "I no longer have a backpack baby," she says, referring to one funny scene in which she's pounding down the stairs of her apartment building with a toddler on her back.
"So, I liked going back to that time, although I never really liked those backpacks. They make you feel like you have an ice cream on a cone and it's about to fall over. I think I threw out my lower back doing those endless pounding-up-the-stairs shots."
The entire film takes place in a single day, starting at dawn as Eliza prepares to throw her daughter's 6th birthday party, mind her toddler son, battle for a parking space during an epic alternate-side-parking showdown, navigate playground politics with overbearing moms, and mend a rift after posting her best friend's confession on her blog.
On top of it all, Eliza decides to enter a writing contest. All she has to do is write 500 words answering the deceptively simple question, "What Does Motherhood Mean to Me?"
Asked how she related to her movie character, Thurman says: "I like the fact that she has flaws and anger issues -- and, yet, she still loves her kids."
