Travel and Weather

user

Well I must say, much as I figure I know about the kind of weather to expect in Kansas, since I grew up there, I was fooled this trip! It's just barely officially fall, and there are snow-showers forecast up where I'm heading this weekend to visit niece and nephews. I arrived in El Dorado on Tuesday, which was nice and sunny, just chilly enough to please this refugee from the hot and humid Texas Coast. However, the weather has taken a decided downturn ever since, with decreasing temperatures and more or less nonstop rain, sometimes torrential. I have enjoyed the rain, more than one would imagine, because we have been so dry in Texas, in the midst of a major drought. Ya gotta be careful what you wish for, you know? I've made a run on WalMart shopping for warm clothes, as I was expecting a more normal Kansas autumn.

My motel has a computer available for guests in the lobby, so I'm able to keep in touch with my public (and family!). Yesterday morning, I got rained in at the lobby, with torrential downpour preventing a trek back to my room for a couple of hours. I hear it's still baking on the Texas Coast, upper 90s or so? So I'm going to try my best to pack several boxes of cold air to take home with me. Maybe I can hook on to a cool front and drag it through Texas.

Family has been wining and dining me, at home and on the town as well. Very nice. Great visiting with everyone--super lot to catch up on. My 4 nieces in El Dorado (one visiting from Florida) and I have the most fun sharing what we've been up to, what we plan to get up to, and talking about what all everyone else has been up to. My big sister, Gail Martin, the Kansas writer, and one of her daughters has a book-signing this Sunday for their new books, and they've allowed me to get in on the event since I'm here.

Out on the town tonight for a concert, so I'll report on that tomorrow. Please leave comments, so I know someone's reading!

I'm freezing. Kansas was supposed to be in the 70s for our visit, not the 40s and 50s. Great to see you anyway!

Well, it IS chilly and damp here, isn't it?! Enjoyed meeting Lilah (and Sassy) after hearing so much about her for 30-some years. ;-) Thanks so much to you both for dinner and the concert at the Iron Horse. Wood's Tea Company from Vermont--so very good, so talented!
