Organize Your Closet In An Afternoon

An organized closet looks great, but ultimately it is an issue of functionality.  Who wants to spend time digging through a closet looking for something you swore you just saw the other day?

You don't have to spend thousands of dollars on a custom closet to make your space look great and work for you.  Best of all, it doesn't even have to take a lot of time.  In just an afternoon you can create an organized closet that looks amazing!

It doesn't have to cost you any money to create an organized closet, but if you choose, here are some items that will aid the organization process:
  • 1 type of hangar
    • Whether it's plastic or more expensive wood hangars, having just one kind will make your closet look cleaner and more uniform
  • Clear plastic bins or cute baskets
    • Great for smaller items like hats, gloves, wallets, handbags, watches
  • Large plastic containers
    • Store your out of season clothes is these bug proof bins in the garage, attic, or the bottom of your closet
  • Boxes with lids
    • Store things like purses and other items you don't want to get dusty
  • Wall Hooks
    • Perfect for Scarves, belts, ties, and hats
  • Shoe organizer

Here's what you will need to do to organize your closet:

  • Take everything out so you can start with a clean slate
  • Sort through your stuff
    • Put anything you want to donate to charity in garbage bags and get it out of the way
    • As a general rule, if you haven't worn it in a year, get rid of it!
  • Assess the items you want to keep.  Make piles or areas for your different types of items.  For example if you have shelves in your closet, place all the things you want to put on the shelves (like sweaters, tee shirts, jeans, or other things that fold neatly) into a pile.
  • Once everything is sorted, start hanging things up.  Sort by style and color
    • For example, hang all casual shirts together, then sort them by color.  Keep the same color order throughout all the different types of clothes.  It creates a sense of unity.
    • Hang the clothes you use most often in the easiest part of the closet to access
  • Store all accessories in appropriate containers
    • See above
  • Place your shoes on a shoe rack or line up nicely

In one afternoon you can completely transform the look of your closet.  Think of how much time and frustration you will save after it's clean and organized.
