How to Negotiate a Better Hotel Price

user

By Sandy Mitchell

It's an old saying, but it's true: To get what you want, sometimes you have to ask for it. Even if the idea of negotiating a better rate for a hotel room fills you with dread, these four simple steps will make you an expert in no time. Take advantage of room rates for members of associations, corporate rates, rates for special packages and a myriad of other secret prices. You'll discover that finding the best rate can sometimes be daunting, but it's never impossible.

Step 1: Ask, then ask again.
Very often, the first quoted hotel rate is not the lowest price for the room. Ask specifically if the rate you are quoted is, in fact, the lowest rate. Then ask about weekend specials, corporate rates (if you are traveling on business; you often don't need to work for a large company to qualify) and any promotional packages.

Step 2: Join associations with travel perks.
Many associations and clubs offer hotel discounts as part of their membership package. Two of the most popular of these are AARP and AAA. Other less obvious discounts come with membership in car rental or airline frequent traveler programs; industry associations, such as the American Bar Association; and bank or retailer frequent shopper clubs. Open your wallet at the hotel desk or at your travel agent's office and list the clubs to which you belong.

Step 3: Review your rate before traveling.
Although, in general, the best hotel rates (and airline rates and cruise fares) go to travelers who are able to book their trip well in advance, rates occasionally decrease. Call your travel agent or the hotel directly at least two weeks prior to your arrival and ask if you still are booked at the lowest rate.

Step 4: Verify the rate at check in.
Some hotels will discount their rooms on the day of arrival if there is light occupancy that evening. Ask one final time when you arrive at the hotel to see if any such discount has been added.
