How much money do you need to retire?

http://helpmeto.info/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/money344.jpg
Most women know what their "number" is, but as we get older another Number starts to matter a whole lot more. It's not as sexy, but knowing how much you need to retire--and how much you have--are important financial factoids to keep front and center.

$1,265,700

Step One: If you haven't already, pay a quick visit to the Social Security site. You can learn a bit about your benefits there, as well as how to read that pesky statement they send every year just before your birthday.

Did you know: The later you retire, the higher your monthly SS payment is likely to be?

Did you know: The Social Security administration, although much maligned, is likely to be around in 30 years, still eking out benefits? So don't write it off.

BUT, did you know that your SS benefits are likely to be so small, you can't count on them for much more than, say, grocery money each month. My husband and I, together, are going to get about $24,000 a year when we retire. In 30 years, after inflation, that's not going to add up to much. We estimate that it's about 25% of what our expenses will be by then.

LUCKILY THAT'S WHY YOU'RE READING THIS BLOG!!!

WTH? If I see a step one, I'm usually expecting a step 2, 3, and so on. Did I miss something?

And if you are a city/state employee and don't pay into social security you are screwed... especially if your spouse that does pay into social security dies because unless you are paying into or have paid into social security you won't get your spouses if they die before you do.
