Holiday Loneliness and How You Can Make a Difference

Holidays are a time of fun for many people and most of us are more busy at this time than we can humanly manage, but there are people we know that are older, often alone, and have very little to do at this time of year. They are remembering the busy times of their lives and the people they used to care for. Many seniors become quite sad and lonely around the holidays and it is often a time that accidents or illness occur and sometimes both. The death rate increases hugely at this time for the elderly and for those suffering with chronic illnesses.

The good news is it does not take money to be someone's lifeline. It only takes time. Some ideas that mean so much and are easy to do:

Make that phone call,

Stop by an older person's home,

Drop off cookies,

Take your dog to visit someone in a nursing home,

Send a card with a personal note of a good memory,

Hug someone who is alone - touch is so needed and gets more rare as we get older and lose people we love.

I know it is not easy to find time when you are already busy but it is such a little thing that means so much. And besides, what goes around comes around; someday, if you are lucky, you will be old too!

I work in a nursing facility, and nothing is more important than showing elderly people that they count, and that we do care about them. Just spending time talking with them gives them a huge lift, and we have people who have their dogs, (registered therapy dogs) come into the facility and spend time with the residents. These dogs just love it, and so do the residents! I also worked in homecare. God bless you for spreading a very important message to people. LOL!!!

Hey Nadine, your message is a great reminder. I just moved and now I feel I must make my cookies for my new elderly neighbors. Number 1, to be neighborly and number 2, to reach out and show them I care and especially that Jesus cares.

Time is the most precious commodity. Think about the times in your life you remember the best, how many of those memories are connected to money and how many are connected to people?

    Thanks for commenting.

This is wonderful!! Great message for everyone to remember. I love it! For so many of our clients, ones that have close family and ones that don't, just knowing someone is thinking of them makes them feel so special. It is great to see their eyes light up.
