911 abuse: New trend in fast food emergencies

ehow

ehow

Remember that customer who spilled hot McDonald's coffee on her lap and was awarded millions of dollars from a lawsuit because she wanted a warning about the coffee temperature? Sure, a tiny part of me wished I'd thought of that, but the other 99% of me was like, why are people such idiots? It's hot coffee. Hot coffee burns. Duh. Stop complaining!

When did we become this nation of "Judge Judy" plaintiffs who want to sue or rat out someone for completely asinine things that are largely caused by our own stupidity?

I can't help but notice this growing trend, specifically happening with customer dissatisfaction at fast food restaurants. Today I read about a man in Oregon, who called 911 after a rude McDonald's employee didn't give him the orange juice he ordered. At the same time, another employee also called 911 claiming Osman was blocking the drive-thru lane and knocking on the restaurant windows. Forgive me, but perhaps before tying up an emergency telephone line he could have notified the store manager. Sure enough, Osman was accused of improper use of 911 and spent Memorial Day in jail.

Back in February, Jean Fortune, 66, of Florida called 911 over a similar complaint: He was hungry after work, went to Burger King and ordered a value meal with a lemonade, and when he drove up to pay, they were out of lemonade. They offered him a Coke, but he opted to call the police. "You cannot dial 911 'cause you're unhappy with your burger," a dispatcher said over the phone. "Customer service is not a reason to call 911. 911 is if you're dying. Do you understand that?" Apparently he did not.

And neither did 27-year-old Latreasa L. Goodman, also of Florida. She paid for a 10-piece chicken McNuggets at McDonald's, and then was told they were out of them and they could not give her a refund. She didn't want anything else and became furious, so she called 911 three times! Click here to listen to her crazed phone calls. After being issued a misdemeanor citation, Goodman claimed, "this is an emergency, my McNuggets are an emergency."

Have Americans become trigger happy with 911? Would you ever call the emergency hotline over something that wasn't life-threatening? And most importantly, how upset do you get when someone screws up your food order? [Yahoo][Smoking Gun][Smoking Gun]

I actualy saw the mc nugget lady featured as sort of a parody thing on southland like a week ago and thought omg I hope the woman who actualy did that saw it and saw just how stupid she actualy looked. What is wrong with people seriously? If some dies because you didn't get your diet coke I hope you choke to death on your damned diet coke.

I want to know what makes people think it's such an emergency that they have to call 911? People are idiots and they are getting dumber and dumber by the decade...

Oh and I REALLY REALLY want to be on one of those juries where people do stupid things and then sue the company/person for the stupid thing the plaintiff did... For real!!

It is calls like these that result in people dying from neglect because 911 operators do not take them seriously. The little boy who's mother had passed out (and later died) and the woman who's boyfriend had shot her in the head (she lived), did not receive timely help because stupid people call 911 for dumb reasons and the operators become calloused.

In the stories in this article it seems like someone's parent didn't give the a good talking to about what 911 was for when they were kids playing on the phone!

How about when these people sue, the company they are suing is awarded the millions that the person is seeking? That should put an end to all these petty lawsuits and nonsense 911 calls!

This seems to be happening more and more often.Perhaps there should be a public announcement message through TV that plays for a couple of weeks during prime time, detailing the only reason to call 911. We have some very stupid people among us. Kids need to know as well. There was a small boy who called 911 for help with his math homework. He did what his mom had instructed him... call 911 if he needed help.

I cannot believe I just wasted five minutes of my life reading about these stupid people. And, of course, now I'm obligated to waste more of my life to comment about them.

    *eye roll*

The customer service in this country SUCKS, that said, it is still NO REASON to call 911.

I don't understand idiots and entitled attitudes. maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that a person calls 911 in a life or death emergency.

I don't even know what to comment about these idiots. Maybe it's time we make some type of license to reproduce!

Maybe you should check your facts first. How hot should coffee be Joanna Douglas? The coffee that McDonald's served at the time that the lawsuit was filed would cause 3rd degree burns in 2-7 seconds. Do you know what a 3rd degree burn is like? Yeah, there is personal responsibility, but there is also a responsibility on the part of companies who make billions of dollars to not serve products that are unreasonably dangerous. There were more than 700 complaints against McDonald's for burns at that time. They knew they had a dangerous product and still continued to serve the coffee, knowing the harm that it caused.

Also, the lawsuit did not pay millions. The woman tried to settle with McDonald's for $20,000 and McDonald's refused. The jury wanted to award the woman $2.7 million - the amount of money that McDonald's made in just coffee sales for only 2 days. Now, how come we don't hear a story about that?

Anyone who would tie up a 911 emergency line over not getting what they ordered at a fast food restaurant needs to be drug checked, alcohol checked and then psychiatric checked. Or just go to a REAL restaurant. I don't think 911 dispatchers or police should have to have their time tied up with this kind of crap. People who pull this need to spend at least a day in jail and find out what real life is all about.
