3 steps to clean credit

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for walletwithcc.jpg
Keeping your credit spiffy nowadays is just as essential as all the other Musts: the bi-annual doctor visits, daily vitamins, flossing.

That said, the Dos and Don'ts of credit can be puzzling. Do late payments matter? Should you get credit monitoring? How do you get a copy of your credit score?

If you are ready for some in-depth answers, I encourage you to read this Money Adviser article. Otherwise, if you're just getting started, here are three simple things to do now:

1) Get a copy of your FREE credit report from annualcreditreport.com. DON'T use the ones advertised on TV, like FreeCreditReport.com (those will suck you into pricey credit services). You're entitled to one free copy per year by law, and annualcreditreport.com is the official website. You can download a copy from each of the three credit bureaus or have your reports mailed to you.

See our tips: My favorite EZ money saver!

2) Either way, review them for errors and submit corrections ASAP (the website has an online form you can submit; I've used it and it is effective). Even a simple clean-up can help to boost your score, because studies have shown that most reports contain errors. Request a follow-up copy in a few months to make sure the errors were fixed.

3) Get a copy of your credit score from www.myfico.com to see where you stand. FICO is the most widely used credit score. If you want to know what banks and other lenders are seeing, get your FICO. You have to pay for it, but it's worth knowing whether you need to do more to improve your credit, or whether you're doing fine. HINT: Don't be anxious. In the last class I taught, several women were certain they had terrible scores--and they didn't!

This is absolutely true, but I would begin by telling people to PAY THEIR DAMN BILLS! Stop living outside of their means. I can not even tell you how many people I know live in debt. They never have any money and then when they go out they immediately pull out the credit card. I just dont know how they do it. Meanwhile, me and my husband do our best to maintain a good lifestyle. Our score is now almost perfect and believe me it has taken us about 5 years to get it that way and alot of sacrifice. There was a point where I used to get embarrased because I could not go shopping with my girlfriends who used to spend 200-300 dollars on bags. Well, right now I have a house and they dont. Go figure.

Seriously did you ever think that maybe people don't live outside their means. I'm a single mother doing it on her own with no child support. I pretty much live paycheck to paycheck. Guess what my debt is paying off medical bills and even though I'm paying them monthly they still send it in to collections, nice! What do you think is going to happen if something happens and I need more money than I have, it's going on the credit card. So not everyone lives in debt because they spend beyond their means. I do pay my bills they just aren't always on time since we pretty much live paycheck to paycheck.

cherishsands - questions since you put it out there if you don't mind: why don't you get child support is the person in jail, dead, living in FL? Just curious if you don't mind sharing.

My mom was a single parent w/o child support. Are these medical bills for you or the children? I do agree with you that when you live pay check to pay check - if(when) an emergency happens you'll need to put it on the card.

Do you have a lot of non medical debt? (not picking on you I'm going somewhere with this)

What I've noticed with helping loved ones is that one side is the emergency and the other is usually an income issue. If you had more coming in then you'd be able to save and when an emergency happend you'd have something to fall back on - not the cards.

Is say not to credit cards. I did a quick tally of my limits and with the exception of one I can save up the limits on them all and just have cash for an emergency (in the long run). It's difficult to build a cushion but as you have children that means you get a child credit and should be able to get a tax return. Why not take half of that and put it in the bank.

I don't know what state you live in but help is available.

I am single, young and I don't have any kids...I'm actually a student that goes to school at night and work two jobs...now I don't have BAD credit per se, but I can't get a loan or school on my own because my debt to income ratio is too high!...No I do not live above my means, but when you calculate rent, car insurance, life insurance, all utilities, phone bill credit card payments etc. it becomes a little hard to pay your bills on time EVERY TIME. So cherish, some people on here may not understand because they are either perfect or never went through what you're going through, but I do feel your pain. Just continue to read much constuctive advice and take it one day at a time. Please do ignore self-righteous people. God bless.

I have been a single mother for 12yrs. My daughter is now 17 and will be graduating this coming year. I understand very well why it is important to live within your means. I am fortunate to have a job with very good health insurance. I have lived without even having a credit card for the past 12yrs. It didn't take long for me to adjust to living a cash life and I can't imagine worrying about credit card bills coming in the mail. I haven't heard anyone suggest getting a part time second job. No one enjoys doing this but it can be very helpful in not only getting yourself out of debt quicker, but you can put some aside. People have asked me if this bad economy has hurt me financially and I respond that I'm already used to a low standard of living. I sympathize with the single mom, no child support and medical bills on top of everything else. Been there done that. Dealt with it for years. Have you considered getting a roommate with a child to help pay the bills? If you had a roommate with their own child and you two worked opposite shifts you could both watch the children while the other is at work. Not only would it save a TREMENDOUS amount of money, it would allow the kids to stay in their own home and they would have a playmate.

I am not sure this is the proper place for my opinions. I am very opinionated about so many things in life. And yes, life is number one. I gave life twice. I have two handsome sons. They both have a tough road to hoe. For the reason that I am mentally disabled due to a Jeep accident. And social security does not have many benefits. It helps you get by,meaning that exactly. I must always be very frugal.

And to pay bills,on time is imposable. I get my check at the end of each month. And keeping up with a mortgage payment, truck repossession, water sewer, electricity, heating oil,gas for the vehicle, vehicle repairs, cloths and nutritious food. Seems impossible,it's not Cause God is a strong enforcer in my life. Even though I must pray every day. It is he that gives me that day ! peter_ankers@yahoo.com
