3 painless ways to save

The image “http://www.ecu.edu/cs-admin/financial_serv/images/Money_Coins.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
Today is Thrifty Thursday, remember! What are some painless, even brainless ways to save? These little things add up, you know. I've gone from $4,210 on 6/23 to $4,441 today!

1) Have a No Spend day.
Does that mean you won't spend a single dime--of course not (or highly unlikely). But by labeling your day No Spend or Spend Less, you'll tend to watch yourself--and your wallet.

Does your money attitude need a change?

2) Change your mind.
Just before you're going to make a purchase, put it back (or empty your "shopping cart"). Invite a friend to have a drink at your house instead of going out. Notice that small acts of restraint feel good, without sliding into deprivation.

3) Write down a few sources of spending temptation--a certain catalog, a store, a friend, an email about sample sales--and weed them out of your life. Toss the catalogs, walk or drive past the store (or take a different route), avoid the spendy friend, unsubscribe to any and all email updates on sale products. (I just had to do this with Boden and L.L. Bean).

i agree with your rules but i have a suggestion on rule 3. Instead of canceling the emails, set your mailbox up to automatically move them to a "sale" folder. Then if you do find yourself looking to buy something imparticular (a new fleece for your camping trip, or whatever) you are still up to date on their best deals going but they arent in your face

Good post. I do the "no spend" day and it's great. It makes me feel more in control. I also toss my catalogs before they come into the house. Don't even look at them. Most of the catalogs are so repetitive it's easy to toss them. I can always find items online if needed. I'm working on not spending and paying off debt at the same time. Boring!!! But I'm making headway....oh, I also do treat myself weekly to something (usually my fav coffee drink) that way I don't feel deprived.

I have gotten to the point no of no spend weekends. If you don't mind spending one weekend a month just siting around the house and watching movies you can save a bundle. I also pack my lunch for work every day. It only costs me about $10 to $12 bucks for the week verse $8 to $10 bucks a day. That adds up pretty quick. I have been doing that so long now I don't even like to eat out any more. As far as paying debt off I am almost debt free, I only owe on my house and have two years left and I will own everything and owe no money.
