One common New Year’s Resolution is to “make more money”. Here are eleven ways you can increase your bottom line this year.
1. Host a Garage/Yard Sale
Yes, the weather may be cold. Still, it’s a great time to look
around your home and collect the items you no longer use or want
and prepare for a garage sale. People may be shopping less overall
but everyone is still looking for a good deal. You can give them a
good deal.
(You can also consider donating these items to a charitable organization if you’d like to have an extra tax write-off instead).
2. Sell Items on e-Bay
If you have fewer items than you’d need for a garage sale,
higher-ticket items, or do not want to make a public display of
raising cash… consider e-Bay. Some people also use e-Bay as a way
to re-sell items they get on discount. For example, some will shop
thrift stores and look for brand-name items that they can sell for
more at e-Bay.
3. Babysit
If you like children and have good references you can pick up extra
money as a babysitter. There are sites where you can register and
potentially earn more if you know CPR or other techniques.
4. Rent out a Room
If you have an extra room in your house consider renting it out.
Make sure it it competitively priced by checking rates and common
amenities in your area.
5. Medical or Market Research
You can earn extra money participating in medical or market
research. Medical research pays more because you’re potentially
taking on the risk of trying a new drug. But not always. Sometimes
you can make money with lower-risk activities such as answering
survey questions on prescription drugs or aspects of your current
lifestyle.
Market research — like trying a new product or watching a new movie release — can earn you money and possibly product(s) you enjoy.
6. Bake Sales and Crafts
Depending on the rules in your area you can sell food made in your
home at the local farmer’s market (check first). Another hobby that
can make you more money is to sell your handmade items online at
places such as etsy.com.
7. Part-Time Job
Sometimes the best way to earn more is to work more. Some common
approaches are to work catering meals, sign up for temp work, or
participate in seasonal work.
8. Start a Blog, Niche Site, or Podcast
If you can produce content regularly and gain advertisers you can
make money. One example of a money-making technology podcast is
SDRNews.com.
However: be aware this can take a significant time commitment,
too.
9. Offer Your Services on Craigslist or the Community
Paper
You can make money doing what you do for work or for fun by posting
your availability online or in a local resource. Emphasize why your
services are the best value. And, network with your friends and
neighbors to let others know you’re offering additional
services.
10. Clean Houses or Mow Yards
Before you turn up your nose on taking a “high school job”,
consider that great fortunes have been made by entrepreneurs who
refined these service offerings to the general public. Even on a
small-run basis you can earn regular clients and a steady income
stream. And exercise to boot!
