Why you should get the H1N1 swine flu vaccine

A poll conducted by the Associated Press suggests that more than one-third of parents in the U.S. fear adverse effects of the swine flu vaccine, and oppose immunization of their children. As a physician, father of 5, and a member of the body politic—I understand this reticence, but disagree with it.  I have advised my two daughters in college to be vaccinated.  My three younger children living at home all had H1N1 in the spring—and thus may not need the vaccine, but will get it to be on the safe side if the area pediatricians have a sufficient supply.  As a health care provider, I, too, will get the vaccine, even though I likely had a bout of this flu in the spring as well.  I have already received the annual flu vaccine, as I do every year.

What do swine flu symptoms look like?

So why are so many of us afraid of vaccines in general, flu vaccines more particularly, and this flu vaccine even more so?  And why is this fear exaggerated, if not totally unfounded? A few reasons:

1) Vaccines are intrinsically scary.
For one thing, vaccines involve needles, and most people don't much care for them.  They also involve having a foreign protein, combination of proteins, or weakened germ intentionally introduced into our bodies.  I think it's rational to be somewhat afraid of that “invasion.” Rational, but wrong (more on that below).

2) We look just one way.
Vaccine fear is largely related to the fact that we, or our kids, need to be vaccinated when feeling fine.  The whole idea of immunization is to prevent illness—not treat it.  When feeling fine, it is easy to think that the vaccine, rather than the disease it is intended to prevent, is the greater danger.  But to get the calculation right, both have to be fully considered.  Looking both ways—the pros and cons of the vaccine versus the pros and cons of getting the infection—favors the H1N1 vaccine over opting out, just as it favors the use of all vaccines recommended by the Advisory Council on Immunization Practices.  This perspective is ignored by the vaccine conspiracy theories that tend to populate cyberspace, but they are just so much hearsay.

7 dangerous myths about swine flu

3) We live in luxury.
Fear of vaccines is a luxury that develops in societies that are not ravaged by the diseases vaccines prevent.  Previous generations of parents who dreaded the arrival of summer as polio season, or who lost children to mumps or measles feared the diseases, and welcomed the vaccines.  Previous generations of humanity ravaged by small pox had cause to view that vaccine as perhaps the single greatest triumph in the history of public health.  Maybe 1918 is just too long ago to make us wince: In that year, pandemic flu killed more people than all the wars of the 20th century combined.

While there is no cause to think the current flu has the potential to be nearly that devastating, but there is ample reason to respect it.   In fact, we don't know how devastating H1N1 might be if we don't do what we can to curtail its spread.

4) Everybody remembers 1976.
That was the year a swine flu pandemic threatened, but didn't materialize—and a contaminant in one batch of flu vaccine led to cases of the Guillain-Barré syndrome.  That was, in fact, the worst flu vaccine debacle in history. How bad was it?  Nearly 50 million Americans received the vaccine, and roughly 500 cases of the Guillain-Barré syndrome were associated with it.  That's not great, but it is still only a risk of 1 in 100,000.  There were, all told, 25 deaths associated with the 1976 vaccine.  That's a risk of 1 in 2 million, and makes even the riskiest flu vaccine in history about as common a threat as lightning strike.

The real problem with the 1976 vaccine effort was that the pandemic simply didn't occur.  That's not an issue this time. We know for a fact that pandemic flu is among us.  It is a perfectly clear and already present danger.

5) This vaccine was produced quickly.
One argument against H1N1 vaccination is that the vaccine was manufactured so quickly—how can we know it’s safe? In fact, we can all be thankful and impressed that the public health gears were revved up and the H1N1 vaccine was produced with such alacrity.  I see no evidence of haste or carelessness.  We need a new flu vaccine every year just to deal with garden variety flu, because the influenza virus mutates annually.  So the accelerated timeline for the H1N1 vaccine is a modest difference from business as usual.  The development methods, testing, and oversight of this vaccine are the same as for the annual flu vaccine.  All of the available evidence suggests that the H1N1 vaccine is as safe and effective as every flu vaccine has been since 1976, if not more so.

6) The H1N1 flu is mild, so why bother?
It appears that most cases of H1N1 are fairly mild (my own case certainly was).  Well, thank goodness for that.  But even so, it has killed nearly 200 people in the U.S. so far—at least 60 of them children.  By some accounts, it has killed well over 1,000.  Remember that the “most dangerous” flu vaccine in history was associated with a mortality risk of 1 in 2million!  Even this “mild” flu is vastly more dangerous than the worst vaccine we've ever had!

Then there is the more serious worry.  In 1918, when the world was devastated by pandemic flu, it all began with a mild flu strain in the spring.  As millions became infected in the fall, the virus changed and became lethal.  You know the saying: Those who don't learn from the follies of history are destined to repeat them.

There was no flu vaccine in 1918, and thus no way to prevent the spread of the virus to millions.  That spread, in turn, gave the virus the opportunity to mutate and wreak havoc.  We certainly don't know that this would happen again if we don't use the current vaccine; but we do know that it could happen again.  So while you may feel you are taking a chance by getting vaccinated, we are all playing Russian Roulette if we choose not to.

Best ways to avoid swine flu

My final thoughts: The H1N1 vaccine is safe and effective. The flu virus is neither safe nor predictable.  By vacillating on vaccination, we put ourselves, our children, and our neighbors at risk.  At best, opting out of immunization will result in a small number of preventable deaths, although that will be quite horrible if one of them happens to be someone you love.  At worst, it is an invitation for some very bad history to repeat itself.

I understand your fear.  Yes, opting out of vaccination helps you and your child avoid some very small risk associated with immunization; no medical intervention is totally risk-free.  But it puts you squarely in the path of a greater danger.   My advice as both a physician and a fellow parent is that you guide your child to the far lesser risk by taking them to the pediatrician to get immunized.

Well, I don't know about you, but the swine flu has been around about 6-7 months and only that many? 36,000 Americans die from the flu each year. And only 200? Yes, I do realize this is still a lot, but you don't know how many stories, that are absolutely true, about vaccines. Believe me, my little brother had to much mercury in his system from shots and other things that it caused Autism, and I've heard this same story over and over again. So, there really are dangers about these kinds of things. But I'm sure that most of the people that have died from the swine flu, were probably rather poor, which is why they couldn't recieve medical help. Seriously, this thing had gone way overboard. -.-'

There have been exhaustive studies about a possible link between the MMR and autism specrum disorders. No definative proof. Latest reseach is saying 1 of 150 children show some signs of being somewhere on the autism spectrum chain.

A perfectly healthy 6 year old just died in MN from the H1N1. He was not from a poor family. He was in perfect health.

This has made me re-think the vacc. for my daughter.

Why have we stopped counting H1N1 infections and deaths (link on the bottom)? If some 30,000 people die annually from the seasonal flu, how are they going to know who died from which kind of flu? Symptoms are virtually the same between both.

I would at least count the deaths, so you have an accurate toll, and not have to estimate. But they're not even doing that. What's really crazy is that they stopped counting in July. I want to know exactly how many people have died from seasonal flu and how many have died from H1N1.

Actually, they quit counting in JULY! That's even before the flu season started in the USA. Now we're just assuming and estimating how many people got the H1N1 flu.

How come they didn't stop counting HIV cases and AIDS-related deaths??? After all, there's millions of people who have it and carry it.

The last official number of H1N1 cases was 300,000 worldwide and the last official count of H1N1-related deaths was 3,917 worldwide. They're telling us that they can't keep track of more deaths that that????

So what's the problem here? Are H1N1 infections and deaths slowing down and they don't want us to know? Do they just want to mash together seasonal flu deaths and H1N1 deaths so they can have a bigger number??

And no, I'm not getting the vaccine, either.

There is alot of dangers present with this that you are not being told and thats because well the media is controlled by the government... the information is out there dont believe everything you read this doctor might just be lying there is no proff her kids did get it...

also one shot has 25 times the recommended amount of toxic mercury levels....

    http://www.infowars.com/

Will Swine Flu Vaccines Contain Mercury?

Thimerosal, which is a mercury-based preservative added to multi-dose vials of inactivated annual influenza vaccines and other vaccines, has been associated with brain and immune system dysfunction, including autism.

Thimerosal, which is a mercury-based preservative added to multi-dose vials of inactivated annual influenza vaccines and other vaccines, has been associated withbrain and immune system dysfunction, including autism. Thimerosal WILL be added as a preservative in multi-dose vials of most inactivated (injected) H1N1 swine flu vaccines, although there reportedly will be a limited supply of single dose vials of inactivated swine flu vaccine that do not contain thimerosal.

The live virus nasal spray H1N1 vaccine being created by MedImmune will not contain the preservative thimerosal (and live virus swine flu vaccine will not contain an unlicensed that may be added to inactivated H1N1 vaccines).

There is no way I will be taking this shot or the shot for the seasonal flu. I believe they do not work and will make many sick that would have other wise remained healthy. Common sense precautions will keep you from getting ill, wash your hands, eat healthy, drink plenty of water, exercise, don't drink or smoke in excess, get plenty of rest, take extra vitamins and supplements to boost your immune system and look in to natural ways to stay healthy such as eating more garlic, apple cider vinegar and other natural things.

    Dear Reader,

If you want someone to sort out all the nonsense about H1N1, someone who's well-informed, has no professional agenda, and nothing to gain financially, then Tom Jefferson, M.D., is your guy.

For 15 years, Dr. Jefferson has been studying the nature of influenza and vaccines with the Cochrane Collaboration – a non-profit, independent organization that reviews a wide variety of health care research.

And now Dr. Jefferson and his colleagues have some good news: You can stop worrying about H1N1, and you can even stop worrying about the H1N1 vaccine, if you will only do one thing...

Dr. Jefferson wants you to wash your hands.

In fact, he wants you to wash them right now, wash them whenever you arrive home from public places or social gatherings, and wash them several times each day.

In a recent meta-analysis of six studies that tested physical interventions in curbing the spread of severe respiratory infection, Dr. Jefferson's team found that the wearing of masks, gloves, and hospital gowns had a preventive impact, but were far less effective compared to hand washing more than 10 times each day.

Can it really be that simple? Dr. Jefferson says yes.

In a July 2009 interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, Dr. Jefferson noted that research shows hand washing can prevent more than just the flu.

Dr. Jefferson: "This method can fight against the 200 pathogens that bring about flu symptoms as well as against gastrointestinal viruses and completely unknown germs. One study done in Pakistan has shown that hand-washing can even save children's lives. Someone should get a Nobel Prize for that!"

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    Changing the game

    -----------------------------------------------------------

So...how about H1N1? Hand washing? Or vaccine? In an interview last month with the Center for Medical Consumers, associate director of the CMC, Maryann Napoli, noted that during the recent Australian winter there were no H1N1 vaccines available. The result: 131 H1N1 deaths in a population of 22 million.

She asked Dr. Jefferson if it's fair to conclude that the H1N1 virus didn't turn out to be a pandemic. Dr. Jefferson: "Yes, you may conclude that the H1N1 virus is not the threat that it has been portrayed to be." And then Dr. Jefferson revealed something remarkable that you can be certain won't be highlighted by the mainstream media: Earlier this year, the World Health Organization changed the definition of pandemic.

The earlier WHO definition reads: "An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus appears against which the human population has no immunity, resulting in epidemics worldwide with enormous numbers of deaths and illness."

The revised definition removes this phrase: "with enormous numbers of deaths and illness" – which significantly lowers the bar for defining a pandemic.

When Ms. Napoli asked Dr. Jefferson about this change, he said: "I am wondering if this means that the world will always be in a pandemic. The world will always have to be doubly vaccinated and the world will always be spending a huge amount of money for vaccines, and of course, buying anti-viral drugs by the barrel load.

"Journalists and others have contacted WHO to find out why the change in definition, and they are always told that someone will get back to them, which never happens."

Later in the interview, Dr. Jefferson takes off the gloves and states simply that the so-called pandemic is a "commercial operation."

Dr. Jefferson: "Why else would the Australian government plan to immunize millions of people after the epidemic with a partially evaluated vaccine?"

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    The forecast: milder than expected

    -----------------------------------------------------------

The Cochrane Collaboration has reviewed every influenza vaccine study conducted between 1948 and 2007. The result: "There is no evidence whatsoever that seasonal influenza vaccines have any effect, especially in the elderly and young children. No evidence of reduced cases, deaths, complications."

And Dr. Jefferson adds: "There is no problem with the H1N1 virus. It's no different from any other seasonal virus. In fact, it looks – from the Australian experience – like it's going to be milder and it can be handled with public health measures, such as hand washing."

If you have friends or family members who are on the fence about getting the seasonal flu vaccine and/or an H1N1 shot, do them a favor and forward this information so they can get an unbiased perspective from a true insider.

OMG people! There is a reason your children are not dying of mealses, being crippled by polio or a plauge of small pox is not sweeping our nation, it is all becuase of vaccinations!!!! Because of vaccinations, there is no natural immunity to these deadly diseases, so if your child catches it, YOU ARE RISKING THIER LIVES! I agree with the author's statement that "Fear of vaccines is a luxury that develops in societies that are not ravaged by the diseases vaccines prevent. " Almost everyone I know has been vaccinated and none of them has Autism or died! Vaccines have helped more people than they have hurt, and until you can PROVE a direct link to Autism and vaccines I will continue to vaccinate myself and my children. There is no solid, direct medical evidence proving this as of yet, just theories. The exact cause of Autism isn't even known! I will be keeping my children away from your unvaccinated children on the playground and advocating that your kids not attend school with my children either.
