The candy conundrum: How to handle Halloween temptations

The good news: It's going to be a record breaking Halloween! The bad news: The record in question is the amount we're all spending on candy....

Last year American's spend $1.77 billion on sweets, and this year it's up to $1.89 billion - that's $22.50 per person! Wondering how your waistline is going to survive a season's worth of sweets? Here are SELF's top three tips for escaping Candy Land unscathed.

Step away from the candy bowl.... About six feet away, to be exact. Candy consumption dropped by two thirds when the goodies were kept 6 feet away from snackers, according to a study done at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. What does this mean for you? Do not... I repeat, DO NOT volunteer to be the keeper of the office candy bowl!

See our tips: 7 easy, healthy Halloween treats!

Eat well 90 percent of the time. So you had a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup? It's fine! And you ate it with your morning coffee? Who cares! Give in when the urge strikes and then bounce back. As long as you eat well the rest of the day, even a candy bar breakfast will fade away.

Pick your poison. I die for Peanut M&Ms. Those yellow packets call to me year round! Sometimes, I spend so much energy resisting them, and trying to substitute other foods for them ("Heyyyy, if I close my eyes, this sliced apple dipped in peanut butter kind of tastes like candy...") that at the end of the day I end up eating more calories than I would have had I just eaten what I really wanted - and I feel less satisfied!

What's there to handle? Don't scarf up everything in sight and just have some. It's called moderation. If you just can't put the M&Ms down until you puke, you have more problems than Halloween candy. Or find a picture of a fat woman with rolls and her teeth rotted out to use for inspiration. Try the People of Walmart site, that oughta do it.
