The Benefits of Getting Your Period

If you think getting your period isn’t fun or exciting, then you don't know how cool “the curse” really is! There are several benefits to getting your period; in fact, menstruation can actually be good for your physical, mental, and emotional health.

“I’d always considered my period a nuisance,” says Trina Read, author of Till Sex Do Us Part: Make Your Married Sex Irresistible. “When I was pregnant and later breastfeeding, it was a relief not to get it. But after I had Andrew, I began missing it! It felt like a part of me went missing…and I was shocked by how happy I was to get my period back.”

Your period can slow the aging process. According to Dr. Thomas Perls, a leading U.S. longevity expert, women age more slowly than men because menstruation causes iron loss. Iron feeds free radicals, which increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s. Losing iron via blood can lengthen lifespan - which may be one of the  reasons women live longer than men .

Menstruation can offer hints that prevent disease. “When women menstruate, the color, odor, and texture of the menstrual blood can provide invaluable information as to the well-being of the woman,” says Dr Lauri Grossman, Chair of the Department of Medicine and Humanistic Studies at the American Medical College of Homeopathy. Menstrual blood can offer early signs of developing illness and allow for the prevention of disease.

Your period can lead to more satisfaction in the bedroom. During menstruation, testosterone increases and enhances libido, which makes sex better for some women (and can be a benefit of getting your period!). “There is no reason not to have sex while on your period,” says Dr Booth. “But, contrary to popular belief, pregnancy can happen if there is no contraception, because sperm can live for several days and fertilize the developing egg.”

Regular periods offer information about your hormones. Regular periods are the best sign of hormone balance – as long as you're not pregnant, nursing or in menopause. A regular menstrual cycle shows that your body is working the way Mother Nature intended. “While most women associate premenstrual syndrome or PMS with their hormones, it’s actually the absence of hormones during this period (a few days before menstruation) that leaves them feeling less than ideal,” says Dr Booth.

Honey when I'm laying in the floor in pain, and then throwing up I can't think of anything positive about having my period. To me, my period is only a means to get pregnant some day. Until I decide to have children I'll save the migranes, back pain, breast soreness, cramps, and nausea for another time :)

While I struggled with an eating disorder, I stopped getting my period for a time. It was (somewhat) a relief to get it back because it meant that things were finally regulating themselves. After a few months, however, I couldn't believe that I'd ever hoped for it :-/ I should have enjoyed no period while it lasted.

No. No thanks. I am not a fan of the pyramid, the bloating, the sore nips, the salt battle, the nosebleeds, the cramps (sugar or not some months they just happen), the pimples, oh and the blood, which I refer to as "murder pants". There. I said it.

I agree with em_moore92, the skinnier I am the shorter the whole mess is. Moon Goddess, bongo drummer, I am not

Haha Lizbeth, love the murder pants comment. I believe that for all women on hormonal birth control, this article is irrelevant (and doesn't that leave out a giant chunk of woman?) because our "periods" aren't the natural sort. We tell our bodies when to bleed and there isn't any eggs coming out.

My boyfriend and I call my period "shark week" for a reason. I can't get excited about that.

These reasons still aren't good enough! I hate my period...there were times where the pain was sooo bad, I thought I was dying...vomiting, cold sweats, bloating, cramps...sitting on the toilet rocking back and forth...my least fav...loss of appetite...I am one of the few women who actually would like to gain some weight but every time "the enemy" comes on, I lose weight and and my appetite and this continues even after "the enemy" is gone! ugh...I'm not impressed:-(

Uh..no. Still doesn't make it a good thing. I had cramps that were so bad that I wouldn't be able to go to school, eat, sleep, or even get dressed. I had to see my doctor to get help. I still get pretty bad cramps, and I hate breaking out. I'm not going to think about the "good" things when the bad things are immediately physical

Even being on the pill doesn't make it any better. My skin breaks out, I'm tired, and I'm bloated. Also, there's no way that I would have sex on my period. It's a mess and regardless of how much libido is produced during that time, I can't feel a thing down there once I'm in the full-blown swing of my period. My boyfriend and I hate it when it comes around, but at least I know when it's coming, so that I can warn him, "Hey, no hands below the belt!" As much as I do like the pill that I'm on my pill regulates it to happen on the weekend of all times. I don't care what the benefits are, it's still a b**** to deal with.
