The 10 best (and worst) cities for women

What is it about city and state rankings that we all love so much? Maybe just a good healthy competition between our hometowns? Some FatFighterTV favorites have been Obesity Per State, America’s Fittest Cities, and the Best and Worst Walking Cities in America. Now, SELF magazine has released the Healthiest Places For Women. In at number one…

Burlington, VT. According to SELF, women there have low rates of diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension, smoking, and cervical and ovarian cancer deaths. Residents exercise and walk to work in large numbers. And Burlington has more farmers’ markets than any town on the list, with most now taking food stamps to help more people eat right.

SELF looked at the 100 largest U.S. metropolitan areas and came up with their ranking based on many factors, including rates of diseases, access to health care, air quality, crime rates, exercise, diet and smoking. So, here are the best and worst of the list…

1. Burlington, VT

    Dallas–Fort Worth, TX

    Population: 6,006,082

    2009 ranking: 69 out of 100

    2008 ranking: 68 out of 100

    + Women's cancer death rates are 27 percent below average

    + Excellent scores for water quality

    + Women are more likely than average to wear a seat belt

    – Below-average air quality and high rates of allergies and asthma

    – Women are much less likely to see a dentist compared to the average

    – Texas is among the worst states for access to birth control and abortion

    ~~~
    We can do much better... :-\ I live in one of the midcities... and we don't have a bus system, but we have excellent parks and we have YMCA's and our city also has city sponsored rec centers that are like Y's... as well as plenty of outdoors things to do... The one thing I hate though is the Air Quality, which has much to do with urban sprawl and traffic as well as a factory/plant that is not even in the metro area where their air pollution drifts up to the metro area in the summer... It's horrible for me (and many people) I never had allergies until I moved to Oklahoma City... at least not chronic like they are now...
    There are many of us that are trying... But we have a ways to go... And I don't really know about other cities but the ones where I live and my family lives we can get birth control without any (or at least much) grief or hassle. So I don't know why there is a problem obtaining it, because I grew up in the "most conservative" city and neither I nor any of my friends had a problem obtaining a perscription for birth control nor actually filling that perscription... even in highschool... I don't know about abortions as I was never faced with that decision nor do I have the desire to get one if I ever am...
    Define "exercise," because we're one of the fittest states in the US & it's not because we work out in a gym. Bogus and biased list, wonder which corps funded it.
