Test driving the Nike LunarGlide

Lunar Glide.jpg
Hello, all! One of the best parts about being a fitness editor is that I get to test out all the latest and greatest gear and report back to you, our faithful readers. It's a tough job, I'll admit, but I lack the coordination, stage presence and enviable thighs of Beyonce's back-up dancers, so this is the best career option for me. But I digress.

This week, I actually tested out a new product via my running club, RUN NYC. The group is Nike-sponsored, and members are asked to do shoe trials of Nike's newest offerings on our nightly runs. Pretty cool!

I test-drove the Nike LunarGlide, the white-and-orange kicks that have a dual foam layer, one to cushion and one to stabilize. (We featured the LunarGlide and other awesome sneakers in our September guide to finding your sole mate). I'll tell you this much: I ran in Nike sneakers all throughout my high school and college days, and switched over to my current fave, Asics Gel Kayano, thereafter. I have bought the same pair of sneakers for the past 5 years now--and don't get me wrong, I'm still loving them!--so it was fun to try something different.

My impressions: The LunarGlides were super light, and speedy! Our workout was a six-mile tempo run, and it felt good to kick up some dust. And I could definitely feel the dual foam layer--very well-cushioned and supportive.

Now according to our September shoe guide, these sneaks are best suited to runners with flat feet. I've had my foot looked at, and I actually have decently high arches, so in the long-term, these are probably not the ideal pick for my foot type, especially since I log lots of miles training for long races. But for a speedy jaunt around the park, they felt just great! Two thumbs up.

I was excited when these shoes came out because of the ArchStrap, which is supposed to provide arch support so you don't have to tie your shoes so tightly to get the support. I also liked that it is a stability and cushioning hybrid. Unfortunately, I only wore them twice before I remembered why I stopped wearing Nike. For all the high-tech, rocket scientist-created features, they really did not live up to the hype. They were light, but didn't seem to have much cushion or support. After logging a total of 15 miles on the shoes, I took them back to the running store. I think there are better shoes on the market at the $100 price point
