I don't just write about periods. No, sometimes I write about PMS: How do you ease your premenstrual symptoms?

I am at the point where a good rant is in order. It has been one of those weeks of soreness and cramps and bloated, blerghy blahness. All this ickiness has unfortunately collided with a big bowl of leftover Halloween candy and all of it has be done with all this Pre and just get on to the MS part of this moment.

I'm used to these symptoms. After all, I've been ibuprofen-ing my way through them for two decades. Once in a while, though, there's a month that seems to scream at me rather than just slowly hammer from the inside of my uterus. The screams are making me so crazy this week that I not only feel the need to complain about it (a lot) but make it known to all of the Internet (and frankly, I'm just too crabby to care if all this PMS talk is TMI).

There are certainly some great alternative methods to calming premenstrual symptoms -- everything from incorporating gingko, acupuncture and aromatherapy into your self-care routine (you do have a self-care routine, right?) -- and I am definitely open to trying new, more natural remedies. But I've had the best luck when my girlfriends have intervened with recommendations of teas and yoga sequences and flower essences and great massage therapists. These suggestions have, at certain critical and crampy moments, done me a world of good. Maybe that's because I'm not just reading a book or blog, I am getting advice from women who've been there with hot water bottles and fourteen mini candybars and jeans that won't button.

I imagine there are many of you out there who have your own remedies and ways of soothing the PMS symptoms that feel like slow and salt-obsessed torture.

Help a crabby lady out:  So what do you do to ease the pain, cravings, irritability that comes in the period before your period?

I told you I write a lot about this stuff:

Try Oona. You can buy this at health food stores or online. It really really helps!! There are two types, one for PMS and one for during.

Another thing that really helps me is to be aware that you are "sensitive" (as much as I hate hearing those words from my significant other) at that time of the month. Awareness helped me to control the moodiness.

Also, if you are on Birth Control and you are having lots of problems that are not typical, it could be the type of hormones you are on. You may look into changing your birth control to a different type.

omg! There is a certain trick I do that alleviates cramps and bloating...stand up straight, and roll your upper body down while you contract your stomach muscles. Touch your toes if possible and hold it for 10 seconds...roll back up to a standing position and repeat 5 times. I swear it helps. I also take Pamprin Max a week before I start, once a day. It helps ward it off.

I have done so much research on PMS, and it's getting WAY worse as I get older, i'm 40. I become a beast about a week before the period. Obviously there is no magical cure, but I started takeing Evening Primrose Oil capsules, and that seems to help. I don't feel as irritable. Also I made up a blend of essential oils and made a balm and I swear it seems to take the edge off. I'm amazed my boyfriend doesn't leave me every month!

wow its refreshing to hear other women griping like I do about what I go through!! I actually have gotten cramps so bad I threw up! When it's really bad I just pop the ibu like crazy for a day or so and use a heating pad. Thanks for all the tea tips ladies I'll have to try that! As far as my sometimes bad mood swings and crying, my bf is so caring! He realizes its pms and I will get over it soon so he does whatever i need pretty much :)

It amazes me that some women still don't know that ibuprofen works on cramps. The chemical acts directly on the muscles in the uterus to relax the cramps. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) doesn't work in the same way, so it doesn't work as well on cramps. It's best to start taking ibuprofen about two days before you normally start cramping. This way you can prevent them altogether.

If I forget to take it, I get terrible cramps. I know this is not the suggestion you want, but cardio really helps my cramps. I do my favorite cardio -- swing dancing -- so I'm in a better mood afterwards and my cramps are better. If all else fails, chocolate and good stout make my day better.

MIDOL!!!! and heat patches that I place on my tummy. Being very strict about an organic and natural lifestyle for myself, I would normally care about using natural remedies. But around that time of the month, I could care less about that, as long as it makes the pain go away I'm happy :-) note that midol will make you dizzy and sleepy though...

I had to start taking extra calcium for medical reasons this summer. I've had horrible cramps and pms for as long as I remember, it has eliminated the pms and made the cramps managable. I thought my dr. and I had found a miracle cure but as you see, others know too. Give it a shot, it's easy to try anyway.
