Eat Healthy Lunches in the Office

By Lori Rice

Working in an office setting often makes eating a healthy lunch difficult, especially if you work with others who do not share your healthy habits. When everyone else wants to go out or order in, you may be tempted to forget about your boring sandwich from home and join in. By being prepared and flexible you can stick to your plan and eat healthy lunches while at the office.

Step 1
Take a lunch with you to work on a regular basis.
Keep it flavorful and exciting with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean fish or poultry. The more appetizing your meal, the less tempted you will be to eat out.

Step 2
Keep healthy foods in the office fridge or at your desk if possible.
Take in a few extra pieces of fruit, lean meats, a loaf of bread and natural energy bars. This will allow you to have snacks and something to rely on if you should forget your lunch or not have time to make it.

Step 3
Stop by a local supermarket in the mornings before work if you prefer not to pack a lunch.
Use the salad bar to create a healthy lunch or grab a sandwich at the deli to take with you.

Step 4
Choose different areas in which to eat at the office if unhealthy foods tend to linger in your lunch room.
Eat outside on a nice day or in an office together with a friend so you aren't tempted to nibble on foods sitting around.

Step 5
Plan to eat out a few times a week with coworkers if you prefer to dine out at lunch.
Have a place in mind and get to know their menu well so you are aware of which options are healthiest. If portions are large, save half to bring to work for lunch the next day.

Step 6
Contribute to potluck lunches by always bringing a healthy dish such as a green salad, a grain salad or even individual sandwiches or wraps.
This way you know there will be at least one healthy item available for you to enjoy.

Tips and Warnings

  • Stay committed to your healthy habits. You just might serve as a positive example to someone who needs support for making healthier choices in their lives.
  • Eating in every day may make you feel isolated if your coworkers are always going out. Going with them every now and then and making healthy choices may make you feel more comfortable. Also suggest they order in and you can still enjoy your healthy lunch from home while eating together.
