Focus on eating just one food at a time, rather than alternating bites, to automatically eat less, a study in the journal Appetite finds. In the study, subjects ate 18% more fries and 16% more brownies when they switched between the two than when they got their fill of one, and then moved on to the next. Since our tastebuds get tired of a single flavor, you're more likely to feel you've had enough if you stick to just one dish at a time, say researchers.

So, fork up that side of brown rice or that chicken entree until you're ready to move on to the next item on your plate - and don't go back to the one you started with. To make the most of your meal, dig into the healthiest thing on your plate first, since that's the one you'll probably eat the most of.
