All I want for Christmas is...a Planned Parenthood gift certificate?

I am not sure whether to let out a giddy little laugh or raise a woman power fist in the air at the news that Planned Parenthood of Indiana will be offering gift certificates for sale as holiday gifts.

The gift certificates are available for purchase in values from $25 to $100 and can be used for all services the organization provides, whether 'tis the season for pap smears, contraception or routine medical visits and procedures (yes, including abortions).

Planned Parenthood of Indiana's president and CEO, Betty Cockrum, said the offering is out of concern that women will forego basic medical needs during stressed economic times. She added that women in particular are likely to gas up the car or put food on the table than tend to their own healthcare.

Although Cockrum said she would be "amazed if a dime of it goes toward an abortion," the program is, not surprisingly, under fire. The director of one anti-abortion organization called the gift certificates "lethal," asserting that the campaign contradicts the meaning of Christmas, which is "about the celebration of human life."

Planned Parenthood chapters in Illinois, New York, Alaska, and Michigan are also considering offering gift certificates.

There have been some years I've been delighted to get holiday gift cards to my supermarket, Target, and favorite restaurants. Knowing that I was beginning the year with assurance I could stock up on all the things I needed felt like a sigh of relief.  I am privileged not to have to bank on presents to pay for groceries anymore but as a woman vigilent about health matters, I think it would be great to know all my co-pays were taken care of for the year.

What about you? What if you could get the gift of birth control or an annual exam in your stocking this season? Is a Planned Parenthood present an offensive or delightful present to get?

I don't know why anyone would find this an offensive gift just because it's for Christmas. Not everyone celebrates Christmas for religious reasons, you know. Many people celebrate it simply for gift giving, family get togethers, Santa, Frosty, all the commercial Christmas stuff, not the religious part. People need to realize that not everyone is religious. If you are, fine, but leave everyone else alone and stop harrassing people who aren't. It's none of your business if PP offers gift certificates and you don't like it.

This is a GREAT!!!! Imagine girls who want to have birth control can now access it and not have to skip out on it and get pregnant because they couldn't afford it O YAY!

I'd take one, and I'd give one. Its the 21st century... GET OVER IT!

Women do have abortions, and women do use birth control.

    KUDOS!

I have a hard time with this one. I realize and understand that health care is expensive. I work in a hospital and I hear that complaint often. A gift card is a good idea but at planned parenthood? It would be fantastic to give women financial aid for paps, birth control, and breast exams. My concern is about the women who feel that abortion IS a form of birth control. Why would somebody want to pay for that? I don't get it.

I think this is a good idea actually. I hope this becomes more common with healthcare.

Maybe it's different in other cities, but in my city, Planned Parenthood clinics don't even perform abortions, so a PP gift card wouldn't be able to pay for one. They offer exams, pap smears, birth control, pregnancy tests, etc. Not abortions. If you happen to become accidentally pregnant and it is not good news for you, they can help you by presenting you with all the options. They can REFER you to adoption agencies or abortion clinics, etc. So again, I think gift cards are a good idea.

One of these days the government and insurance companies will realize that providing free, easy to access birth control (i.e. pills, IUD, patches) is WAY cheaper than paying for a single birth. Do the math - prevention of an unintended pregnancy = @ $400 year. One birth $7-10,000 - if it's a normal, no complications vaginal with 2 day stay.

I love the idea - private organizations are filling a need the big boys refuse to due to a misguided sense of paternalism.

Sounds like a gag gift I'd give my best friend. I agree with DeAnn. What has our culture come to?
