Welcoming the Return of the milkman...
In the 1960’s the milkman was still a common sight. With the 1970s, came easy access to milk in grocery stores and the spread of ultra-pasteurization, which gave milk a longer shelf life. The milkman disappeared but now he is making a comeback!

In addition to the desire to eat local, fresh foods, the nostalgia of the glass bottles and the milkmen themselves are a huge marketing asset for family dairies. As American’s embrace eating local, healthier, home-grown foods and having foods don't have additives or hormones, the old-fashioned trade of home milk delivery is making a comeback around the country. And that appetite for wholesome fare, coupled with the need to reduce our gas consumption, is giving an unexpected boost to some tiny dairies and local milk distributors, helping them compete against larger rivals who saturate store shelves. Many of these home delivery dairy are old family businesses but some are brand new business responding to the demand.

Our Food411 directory has discovered milkman resources around the country! Many of these local dairy deliveries now offer their own (or local) butter, eggs, cheeses, honey, coffee, syrups, breads - even local meats. It is like a local farm market delivery! With the addition of the internet ordering from your milkman, setting up a delivery schedule is a breeze - most even accept credit cards online!

Convenience, buying local healthier products, recyclable glass bottles or just nostalgia - they are all good reasons to support your local milkman!
