Quit Yer Screamin’—We’ve Got Ice Cream!

And not your usual flavors either. Gourmet gives you a few great reasons to fire up your ice cream maker this summer. For the full slideshow and even more ice cream recipes, head over to gourmet.com.

Star Anise Ice Cream

Star anise’s licorice-like flavor is what sets this ice cream apart. Our version is adapted from the one served at Geordy’s restaurant in San Francisco, where the custard is made with all cream, no milk. And while we’re on the subject of spices, try our Fennel Ice Cream—or go in a more herbal direction with Lemon Verbena Ice Cream.

Sour Cream Ice Cream

Downright delicious on its own, this super–creamy ice cream has a tangy flavor that also makes it a perfect foil for ripe summer fruit.

Blueberry Ice Cream

This smooth, intensely fruity ice cream takes the season’s sweet berries to new heights of flavor. But why stop at blueberries, when you can have raspberry ice cream too? And sweet-tart cranberry ice cream is perfect any time of year.

In this super–quick weeknight sundae, store–bought vanilla ice cream is enlivened by luscious, aromatic nut oil and warm, juicy grapes.

I would like to say those are delicious. But I'm more a fan of the typical flavors of ice cream, like strawberry, butter pecan, even superman (strawberry, banana, and blue moon in one tub), cookies and cream, even vanilla bean. I know that might not sound gourmet or too healthy but really, I think all that you mentioned might not go too well with my stomach. Especially that sour cream ice cream. I'm more curious as to how sour cream got to be such a staple though.

I’ve heard the phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” more times than I care to count. But being the science nerd I am, I won’t believe it until I see it—the scientific evidence, that is.
