Question of the day: What's your edible anti-depressant?

Food can change my mood in an instant. If I'm having a mildly decent day, stick a piece of eel nigiri in my mouth and suddenly I'm sporting a smile the size of Texas. While I love the traditional comforts, my mood lifting eats are slighty more quirky. Here's what's topping my edible anti-depressant chart this month:

1. Salmon sushi cut roll with soy paper and jalapeno
2. Salsalito turkey
3. Al dente spaghetti (pref w/ a fresh tomato basil sauce)
4. Seriously sauteed spinach with garlic and olive oil
5. The perfect chocolate chip cookie (pretty standard)
6. Pinkberry w/ bananas and coco pebbles
7. Pizza with Parmesan and prosciutto
8. Goat cheese
9. Diet Coke (haven't kicked it yet) or diet root beer. I know I'm cheating because they're not foods, but I'm including because a nice, cool DC or RDC enjoyed at the just the right time (approx 4 PM) makes me grin.
10.Sauteed hen of the woods mushrooms

Do certain unexpected foods give you an immediate surge of happiness? I know most of us love the comfort classics: lasagna, fried chicken, mac and cheese, meatballs, etc. but what quirky foods top your edible mood-lifting list?

    Blueberries. Fresh blueberries.

Alas, they are awfully expensive most of the year ( and not very good, either ). The "season" of good and cheap, meanwhile, only seems to last a month. :(

A plate of dolmas with tzatzki sauce, hummus and pitas

kimchi and spring rolls (or is it summer rolls? Whichever are in the rice paper wrappers, those are my favorite!)

    Eggplant rolatini!

    key lime cheesecake

a cheese plate with LOTS of fruit (any kind of cheese, ALL kinds of cheese, doesn't matter, I'm a cheese freak!!)

The perfectly done (rare) ribeye steak (which probably makes me so happy because I only eat one about twice a year!!)

A Cajun boiling pot (shrimp and/or crawfish, corn. potatoes, onion, etc..)

These are the foods that really make me happy and boost my mood!

are you serious?!? you guys are recommending diet coke as an anti-depressant? you need to do some research or at the very least a little homework... Good God (!) propaganda & false information *abounds* on the internet.

Mine isn't a food...it's coffee. and i don't mean the kind that's topped off with whip cream either. I like either a skinny latte or just a big coffee with french vanilla creamer :) that can ALWAYS cheer me up.

Diet Coke is definitely on my list. I don't think people are necessarily recommending it though. I know that Diet Coke is actually terrible for me. However, since I don't eat fast food, rarely eat red meat, exercise 5 times a week, don't smoke, rarely drink alcohol and take supplements, it's a vice I can currently live with. Most "comfort" foods are unhealthy which is why we turn to them when only when we're stressed.

My favorite PMS comfort foods are pickles, olives (green or black) and pepperoncini, all of which are LOADED with salt. For some reason when I PMS, I really really crave salt. I definitely don't consume that stuff in mass quantities like that all month.

Lindt dark chocolate truffles. When I want something really disgusting I get some bacon cheddar fries with a Dr. Pepper. You really should only do that but once a year, lol.

These days it's hard to tell the difference between a chef, a celebrity and a restaurateur. So many actors are now clad in Crocks, critiquing foie gras, sharing family flan recipes or opening Hollywood hot spots.
