Sherri Shepherd: I’ve had more abortions than I would like to count

Many celebrities have gone public about their physical and mental health issues from Gwyneth Paltrow to Ted Kennedy, and sometimes their medical records are leaked without their permission. The View’s latest co-host Sherri Shepherd shared quite a bit of shocking info with black Christian women’s magazine Precious Times, claiming at times she wished she were dead. "My sister was heavy into drugs, and we would have to go and get her from crack houses," says the stand-up comic. The then-Jehovah’s Witness was "in a very physically abusive relationship,” she says. “I was sleeping with a lot of guys and had more abortions than I would like to count." Apparently Shepherd’s self-esteem was so bad, "I felt if someone killed me, it wouldn't even make a difference."

It’s very bold for someone in the public eye to come forward with such private, revealing information, but is it excessive? How much private info do you feel celebrities should divulge about themselves? [US Weekly]

I'm glad Sherri shared her story. Of course it's hard just to say the word abortion let alone to admit to the world you've had several abortions. However a lot of women have had abortions and never tell a soul. They take that bone and throw it in the closet and cry for decades over the incident. Yet when we see someone in the public eye speak on a taboo subject like this we tend to listen even if just to offer negative judgement. Who knows how many women she has helped by this private confession. Not that I think what she did was good....but some women out there who've had this procedure understand how difficult it was to share. Maybe hearing Sherri's story will encourage at least one girl to either abstain from sex or obtain birth control. Either way that's one less abortion!

I really don't mind or really care what celebs reveal about themselves as long as its not for "effect" or a type of gimmick. I like how Sherri was honest and forth right and just put it out there, so someone couldn't be digging in her past and try to blackmail her about anything. I mean its better to hear it from the horse's mouth, so to speak than have the papparazzi leaking out her secrets. And with a woman like Sherri, I'm more than sure she has learned something from her experiences and keeps on improving her life, which is a very good thing.

I know most won't really agree with me but I think Barbara Walters did the same thing, when she wrote her book. I know many feel that cheating and the other woman thing is such a terrible thing to be in or do. But I am glad there was a pretigious woman like Walters to be open and direct. It was something she did, sure she said it wasn't the best thing to do, but I think its way better to own up to what you have done, what you have learned from it, than pushing it aside or throwing it in the closet like the other commentor said and trying to act like it doesn't exist. And to be honest if either woman did something like that, and tried to be extra "cute" and like nothing ever happened in their perfect lives because they are celebs I would actually not like them as well as I do now. I'm just glad they can be honest and open with themselves and the world.

We live in a day and time where the public thinks we own the lives of stars. We research, track down, and sometimes make up information in the name of sharing tidbits about their personal lives. Often times, this is done, without the concern of or respect for the star's family life or other privacy. I think star's will often times "out" themselves just to avoid the continual probing. If they put it out first then the star has an opportunity to control the avenue in which it initiates. That may make a huge difference in how the information travels to the general public. It's sad, but in a way, we've almost forced star's to hang out their own dirty laundry first. Of course, there are the publicity whores who really don't care what you know. Nasty sex tapes come to mind.

More than she can count? Sorry to say, but that's disgusting. Why didn't she get some birth control at one of those multiple doctor visits?? I'm sure it would have been cheaper than the abortions. I'll never be able to look at this person the same way again. I was in an abusive relationship too, but that's no excuse for selfish behavior.

Sheri Shepherd is nuts! Her IQ is one of a retarded dog. Anyone catch her rant on whether or not the earth is flat? Come on! She doesn't even know that the earth is round. Because of that, I can't imagine her judgement on other issues is any better.

There is always someone in the blogging world that can't take information posted for what it is worth, like the a$$hole talking about the earth being flat, She is a comedian U dumb b---- ! I can't imagine your view on any issues being worth listening too. It's personal and maybe too revealing, but I'm sure she is not the only woman who has had multiple abortions and I give her a thumbs up because her story may help someone traveling down the wrong path. Even more important Sheri Shepherd has OBVIOUSLY turned her life around for the best. WAR Sheri!

Hmm..I would think that if you're sleeping around and getting knocked up a lot that it might cause your significant other to get a little abusive.I wonder how HIS self-esteem was holding up...

I appreciate her honesty and her ability to share her personal life. So many people (non celebrities & celebrities) always try to put on such a front and pretend to have their lives in order, when in actuality it's not.

I respect her and thank her so much. She's opened the door for others to be just as honest and still get respected!

Thank you Sherrie and God bless you!

Although I don't think that what she did in her struggling past is anyone's business, it is ok if it gives her a sense of freedom to speak about what she did. I won't judge her for it, she maybe a celeb, but she is also human. The past is gone, what matters is the now and what you do in it. Just for the record Rowdgirl she did not say more than she can count, she said more than she would like to count. There is a difference and a sense of remorse.

I'm not an A$$hole because I didn't get her joke about the earth being flat. This was no joke. She honestly didn't want to discuss the "controversy" of the earth being flat or round, because she thought there was a question of the earth still being flat. uhhh, hellloooo. Have we not seen the earth from a distance? It's round Sherri.

And if it was a joke, she never said so and it wasn't funny.
